Hello, new guy from Kentucky here, Elizabethtown to be more precise. Got away from the whole scanning thing for a while but have slowly but surely got back into it the last few years. Had an old Bearcat as a kid primarily used for going to Talladega and Bristol NASCAR races and it just kind of evolved from there. Currently have a RadioShack Pro 106 and a Uniden SDS150 used for keeping up with the typical law enforcement, EMS, fire, aircraft, etc stuff. Really like the SDS150 and the Sentinel software. Anyhow thanks for having me.

INSIDE the mesa!
Welcome.
You have a nice scanner there.
Hopefully the channels aren't encrypted by you so you can actually hear what's going on.

Nope not encrypted....yet. The fear of that is why I didn't want to pay cash for this thing. Traded a guitar and amp that had been sitting for 7ish years instead. Some agencies are fully encrypted or partially encrypted near me. Hoping departments take the partially encrypted route in my area going forward.

E-town PD isn't encrypted yet? I heard they might be. I'm just a wee bit far to hear them. I do get Hardin SO as well as Radcliff PD pretty good here in Louisville. Some fire stuff too.

EPD is partially encrypted but they don't seem to use that system often yet. I'm sure full encryption is on the way for them. I didn't know LMPD was encrypted until the other day. I work in Louisville and was messing with my scanner on lunch last week and realized it.

LMPD is completely encrypted but for the River Patrol Channel. They have official feeds of Channels 1, 2, 3 and 4, which are delayed and can be accessed with any scanner app.

Some of the small cities police departments (Anchorage, St. Matthews, Shively and Jeffersontown) are not encrypted except for the understandable stuff. The police chiefs in those cities are pretty open about stuff. The only time I've heard them decline to answer questions are for on-going investigations and I see why.

EMS is all encrypted with privacy being the justification, for better or worse.

All but two fire talkgroups are wide open. The encrypted ones are for Arson when they do surveillance things and a fire command channel if they have sensitive info. Something like an injured firefighter and facilitating family notification. Best for such things to not be heard on the scanner by family.

Thanks for Hardin Co update. I travel there from time to time.

First of all let me say I am from Elizabethtown been here for years and I'm in the two-way industry it's what I do secondly there's absolutely zero encryption anywhere in E-Town epd is not encrypted they played with it for a little while and decided to stay unencrypted. Everything in Hardin county is in the wide open there is no encryption it's all conventional p25 mostly simulcast. If you would like to know anything more PM me

Thanks for the info and that's good to hear. I do recall epd messing with it. I believe Radioreference's current Hardin county database even lists epd as being partially encrypted. Glad to hear that isn't the case.

That SDS150 will definitely come in handy as more agencies implement simulcast. As I don't have simulcast in my area right now, I just got a Uniden BCD436HP used for $350. There is some encryption on stuff in my local agencies (like SWAT, tactical, narcotics, interrogations, etc.). Hopefully my good local stuff can stay unencrypted for a good while.

That's awesome and sounds like a solid deal. Heard really good things about those scanners.

Lexington is in Fayette County, two counties away from Estill County. We need to know your city or town and county and what you would like to monitor to be able to help. After some investigation, I found you are in Irvine, KY. I will be checking to see what is available in your area.

It looks like most everything in your area is conventional: Estill County, Kentucky (KY) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference There are only 2 trunked systems: Estill County, Kentucky (KY) Trunked Systems For those, you will need the DMR and NXDN paid upgrades for your SDS150 and BCD996P2. You also have amateur radio: Estill County, Kentucky (KY) Amateur Radio. I'm doing research on state police.
Thank you, but I've pretty well got programming covered. I was only responding to the OP and welcoming them.
