If the unit is in the house, The tone (high-low) for EMS, a single solid tone for a still & double solid tones for a box. They will also call the still phone to give the call details as well as a printout in the watch booth (not a rip & run) for all dispatches (except a box). Initially, the call will be announced to the specific house a single time. After the this process, the call will be dispatched using the "all call selection" meaning the call will be announced to all houses & what you will hear on a scanner. For a box alarm, the company (if in quarters) will pick up the still phone while it is being dispatched to acknowledge receipt of the call & response. If the company is on the air they must acknowledge over the air. The call should be repeated after 30 seconds as per protocol (some still do this) but is on the all-call function & will not be heard in the house(es). They will also broadcast (to the house) when a unit becomes available so the person in the watch booth can adjust the run board accordingly. The tones will illuminate the entire house.

Thank you very much for this detailed post. A real insight into the behind the scenes dispatch of NHFD. The info is definitely appreciated.

New Haven Fire is on UHF, so it's unclear how that would work on your 800 Mhz portable.
