After the rare tornados through New York state disrupting electrical power, telephone communications, and vehicle passage. Many trees across roads, power lines and aerial strung communication lines. Specially in the rural Adirondacks and small towns. Where there are MANY NIMBE'S==== NOT IN MY BACK YARD people. Cellular is spotty to NONE for many miles because Many people who don't understand RF refuse to allow Cellular transmitting devices (towers and antennas).
I have been in radio communications since 1965, I do believe the frustration with natives in the mountains could be cured. Early warning for those who need to be moved to shelters early could have been done before the storms arrived. Repeater systems for everyone to use in case of emergency would be nice But again some do NOT want to see anything but a tree.
I googled GMRS and was educated in how it can be used The 4th page to pull up is Motor trend and reading about off road coms using GMRS Frequencies. That would tie up communications until the cars are put up.
I also found Deer and hog hunters using any radio that work on a frequency will use them without any training or license and will jam until the licensed party gives up. Policing of communications systems is lost?
Local folks are not against having a county wide system that will work before, during and after a tornado goes through. New NIMBYS are the ones that don't want to spoil the VIEW.
Commercial radio manufactures/suppliers would be very happy to sell equipment. But small towns do not have large budgets. Most commercial shops I have trade in stuff. But prefer selling new only and running the used through a band saw.
DOT and State police used low VHF for years 40 MHZ band that worked ok could have been better with a few more remote repeaters.
