Did I read it right that it's possible to use TNC with any radio through... mic adapter?

It's generally possible to use an external TNC with any radio that gives you access to the receive audio output, transmit audio input, and PTT.

Apparently I have to enter a callsign... Is there a dummy callsign? Can I enter some arbitrary string? Would like to test the receiver at least.GPS if i can... Nothing illegal.
APRS seems off by default and for WIRES-X I need to establish the connection from my side. So I just don't push the PTT button, right?

No, the radio will probably be able to transmit as soon as the battery is attached, the antenna is attached, and the radio turned on.

You got the FT-1DX, right? You will need to enter a callsign to transmit in System Fusion digital voice mode. You should be able to skip that step and just monitor.

You should also be able to set up the radio to monitor APRS without entering a callsign.
