Does anyone have an idea on how the New Mexico state police are
transmitting and receiving? Is there a common section (Microwave???)
I have all the freqs. that are listed on all the websites out there,
but I am not picking up both ends of the conversation sometimes unless I am close enough to the car and in a same district. Any help on this would be great as I dont know the NMSP system out here.

When I toured the NMSP Communications Center in Santa Fe several years ago, I asked the same question and found out the following:

The NMSP system uses a microwave network that operates in the 6 GHz. band. Their current radio system was installed in the early 1960s and is becoming rather outdated. They use a two frequency semi-duplex set-up from Motorola. The base will transmit on frequency and the mobile will reply on the other. Even though NMSP cruisers have 100-watt mobile radios, with 3dB gain 5/8 wave antennas; you really need to have a good quality outdoor antenna to receive them. Preferably something with gain and good quality coax cable, to prevent any loss of signal.

I would like to add that it would be nice if the NMSP used a "repeater" that rebroadcasts the patrol car transmissions. This way you and other officers could hear both sides of the conversation; thus, making it easier for you to hear all the action.

Yeah, the Duplex system makes it a PITA to monitor. New Mexico State police have 110 watt A9 VHF Spectra's with UHF extenders in their cars. They do utilize their own dispatch regeon channels, but they also (usually) have the local county frequencies of the countys they operate in programmed in the radios as well. I hear SP units come up on the Sandoval county and Torrance county repeaters all the time. (I'm in Rio Rancho) They will usually go by SP unit XXX on the county systems. Don't forget to monitor State Car to Car 155.55 and State Fire 154.31

Well, for the past month it's been 80 degrees and up and sunny with no rain.....causing our summer nemisis the WILDFIRES to pop up. Good for scanning, but bad for the state in general.

Perhaps Aircargo believes that New Mexico is in another country? I don't think most of the folk in New Mexico have any idea how things are going in Mexico.

Oops...that totally slipped by me.... you are right...I have no idea what's going on down south of the border, other then makeing Ta-killya. It's funny you mentioned that....one of our local TV stations has a weekly segment called "one of the 50 is missing" in which people send in letters in which they tell about how when ordering stuff on the internet, or get letters from friends or family, they tried to get charged for "overseas" or "out of country" shipping rates....or the family wants to know if you need a GREENCARD to live here.... :? The TV station airs the letters on air every week, and it's a hoot. People are stupid....I took Geography back in school...guess some did not.

Monitoring NMHP

I drive an Eighteen Wheeler through the state at one time or another and wondered why I could'nt always hear something. I've taken the delay out of base / mobile freq's I have heard. But basically most of it is Sheriff Office comm's which I can hear quite far away. Usually traveling along Interstate 25 from Raton to Albuquerque. Does NHP in Albuquerque operate on the EDACS Provoice system, so I can't hear it anyway? Thanks! Curiousrich

I though the NM State Police went to a Sat Phone system or something like that?

No, they don't use SAT Phones, I think it's like someone wrote earlier that you need a high gain antenna to hear them. I just went through NM several times this October and I can usually hear the dispatcher on the Base Freq. That's why you need to turn off any radio delay, to hear the mobile response. Which can be the hard part to hear . But just looking at the cruisers you can see the VHF antennas. Remember the mobile responds on a different Freq and if you have maybe 50 Freq's programmed, that's a built in delay.
Thanks and goodbye! Curiousrich

Certin NMSP districts ARE installing Sattalite systems in the cars....but as far as I know it's only being used for MDT applications at this time. The VHF system is still in wide use. From my home, I listen to Albuquerque (district 5) and can pick up the mobile's pretty well, unless they are in the east mountains. I have heard District 5 has a remote site up on sandia crest, which is 10,500 ft....so they can hear a lot better then I can... :) I can also hear Santa Fe dispatch, but no mobiles. There are only 4 different sets of frequencies (1 dispatch, 1 mobile) for the entire state, so if you put in all 8 frequencies when driveing through the state, and are close, you will probably hear the district you are in.

The NMSP uses a satellite system for their MDT, not radio transmission... for now. They are gradually moving over, one step at a time. They have nearly got all kinks out of the sat MDT system (for reports, running 28/29s and such) and they're going to migrate the radio comms that way.

Well I do hear the Albuquerque dispatcher I think on 155.52 {if memory serves me}. But my one bank is also full of Sheriff Office and some local county freq's along that I25 corridor, since any talk is lacking until I get close to Santa Fe. Now I have the Sirius satellite radio to listen too.
Well That's All Bye! Curiousrich
