Last evening, on August 5th, a MSP trooper, who was attending the Lawrence, MA National Night out events made the comment that the MSP could in several years have a new radio system costing upwards of 1/2 a billion dollars.

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Not likely,
only thing on the horizon...maybe....
NEWIN...
Mass state has a new p25 system already....COMRIS....
Cant see them overlaying another TRS just for the SP when the
Moto-Analog system is working.,..and there is MSP-TRS TG migration to
COMRIS already.

Depending on funding, the plan is to migrate to P25 statewide at some point. Currently only the Troop B area is P25. That will migrate east over the years, again as funding permits.

None of the other P25 systems that share the Astro Core are going to be used by the MSP on a routine basis. Nor is it likely that the 700Mhz overlay system in greater Boston will routinely carry MSP traffic.

At least that's how it stands currently, but as with all things government in MA, that's subject to change.

COMIRS is a wonderful acronym, but it's important to remember that Worcester, Cambridge, and MassPort maintain their own systems and share the Astro Core with the MSP. The TG IDs and UIDs are coordinated so that there are no duplicates across the system, but that's been going on for over 10 years.

NEWIN is not a actual system, just an acronym someone on this site made.

As far as MSP upgrading to a new system, the trooper was talking about the existing CoMIRS P25 Trunked System. Currently the new P25 CoMIRS system is only built out in Western MA (Troop B's Area). It will be several years and several millions of dollars before it is built out statewide. Once the CoMIRS P25 system is built out statewide and all of the analog only subscriber units (Portables and Mobiles) are replaced the existing Motorola Type II Trunk will be turned off and discommisioned as it has reached it End of Life and Motorola no longer supports it.

Hello, I'm new to posting here and I saw this newer CoMIRS system so I programmed into my 996P2 scanner but was wondering how active it was since I haven't heard or seen anything on the log in picking up anything. Just reading the above statement saying it will be some time before its statewide. So this is true that its not really active in the eastern part of the state, reason why its so quiet here.I have the regular stuff programmed in and hear them all the time. So I should probably remove the CoMIRS from the scanner and speed up scanning if its not used much here. Finally broke down and bought this scanner since a few towns around me have gone to P25 so was missing out alot of what was happening around me. Been so nice hearing them again. Still learning thou. Thanks for the info. Frank

Very active, the question is what Site/Zone are you attempting to listen to and from Where ??
Your profile indicates Massachusetts, but that is a very large state.

The only sites avail in Eastern Mass for the P25 [CoMIRS] are
Massport, Cambridge, Worcester, DOC Walpole and the 700 Area overlay
and other than the Over-lay, the other zones are primarily for those agencies themselves, altho you may/will hear other traffic from time-time

I haven't paid much attention to MSP in a while. Time for me to step up to the plate and get a Uniden SDS100 or a Unication pager. My BC396xt is nearing end of life, LOL.

You won't get much from Nashua, too far from the Worcester Zone and the 700 Over-lay is designed for Rte-128 +/- [more -]

Hello ecps92, I see someone posted about the Nashua area, that's where I am as well, I live in Tyngsboro so I'm between Nashua,NH and Lowell,Mass. I have most of the main frequencies programmed in so listening to them now, just didn't know if putting in the CoMIRS would yeild any results. There is a lot of stuff listed under it and can only download 20 of the 46 that is listed. So not sure if its worth it at this time.

I do get some stuff from MSP in Nashua with a handheld at home and inside the house. My location the south end favors north instead of toward MA. The hill I live on is in the way but I'm near the top. I can see the towers on Mt. Unc in Goffstown NH but that doesn't help me for MA. My old Nashua location in the north end favored towards the south and I could hear more MSP stuff. I commute down to Framingham MA every day during the week so I'm frequently in MSP's coverage area.

Is that with the CoMIRS frequencies programmed that you are hearing this? or the standard digital channels? I am using a antenna on a 25 foot tower but still near the river here so there's a big hill to the west of me. Just north, south and east I have good coverage on.

You won't get any P25 traffic, just the analog trunk as it's been for the past 20 or so years. Since south Nashua more or less borders MA, you should get decent coverage.

With the CoMIRS freq's programmed in? really, I had them programmed in for a few days but nothing logged. But then again, when I try top down that section, the program only allows 20 max and 46 are listed. Not sure which ones out of the main list to download to get the active ones. Thanks for the info.

The whole system is called COMIRS, not just the P25.

I don't know what you mean when you "top down" the section.

Sorry, meant to say, "when I try too download/input that section", should proofread before I post. Using Proscan to log events, Freescan to program.

Oh. I don't use either of those programs. I tried Freescan once, but found that it was worth what I paid for it.

But what you are likely getting [my assumptions] is the Legacy Analog system for now, Not the P25 [CoMIRS]
Altho the entire system is truly [as gary said] CoMIRS, the DB is broken down here for Analog and P25 as is Scan New England
and you will notice at the bottom of the various counties or even statewide you won't find CoMIRS as it is not in those other counties yet for the P25

Legacy Commonwealth [MSP] System

CoMIRS

many of us try to distinguish between the two, until they all go P25, as it causes confuzzlement to everyone

Yes, I am getting monitoring the trunked system, well the info states Mot Type II/P25 programmed in right now. Is this the wrong are to ask what folks are using for downloading the info to their scanners? I'll check out the 2 areas you mentioned to get a clearer understanding of it. Thank you for the info.

If it is the Type II then that is the Analog system you are monitoring
There are some talkgroups [Radio Techs and Tactical] that use P25 voice, but it is an Analog syste,
