Just moved to NC and was told I need a new scanner to listen to local FD. They use VIPER system. What brand and model base/mobile units are out there to consider? I know nothing about the VIPER system. Thank you

What city/county in North Carolina, that will make a difference, if there is Simulcast in your area then a SDS 100/200 if not then one of the cheaper scanners will work.

What scanner do you have now?

VIPER system, this month, is P25 Phase 1, however next month it is changing to a P25 Phase 2 system.

Lincoln County is not simulcast so all you will need is a P25 phase 2 capable scanner if they are going phase 2 next month.

You can find used uniden Bcd536 scanners on ebay for around $350. I just bought 3, and just finished installing one in my car several minutes ago. New they are $650 or so otherwise. 996XT models are popular as well from what I read from other people's posts. Always double check to make sure it says it will work with P25 phase 2 otherwise it won't work on NC VIPER after July 1st

Radioreference also has a classified area you might want to look at. Sometimes good scanners get posted for sale. I bought my first Bcd536 there

Looks like you will have a bunch to listen to. FD, EMS and Law. Welcome to the NC Forum

Just a thought, since you are in Lincoln County you need to think if you would want to listen to surrounding areas. When you say Denver, I automatically think of multiple areas around Lake Norman you may want to listen to. Iredell County will be going to a simulcast on VIPER. Charlotte/Mecklenburg and some of Gaston County use UASI with Charlotte/Mecklenburg being simulcast. Catawba County uses VIPER but I can't remember if they are simulcast or not. If you have any interest in listening to these, you will want to get one of the Uniden SDS 100 or 200 scanners. Just a thought.

According to this: North Carolina VIPER Counties Verified - The RadioReference Wiki

Catawba County: 100% VIPER, Hickory PD are on their own system however will be moving to VIPER around 2025.

As noted Iredell will be a simulcast on VIPER. Don't forget the Gaston County simulcast on VIPER which covers well into Lincoln County. One really should consider the modern LSM IQ receiver scanners for most areas as simulcast become more prevalent not only on the state system but the local systems that are already in place like UASI, Rowan, Forsyth, etc.

Catawba County is a primary user; Hickory PD has switched already; but all Catawba County sites proper are still ASR and not simulcast/LSM.

I would be reluctant to invest in any other scanner than an SDS100 or SDS200. As usage increases on VIPER, simulcast is inevitable on VIPER, and you are already surrounded by simulcast systems.

Only buy an SDS100, SDS200, Unication G4/G5 or get into commercial radios. Anything else for Viper is waste of time and money due to multi-site distortion.

Being in Denver you'll want to program the Lincolnton Viper Site and the Mooresville Viper Site. Both those sites carry Lincoln County Traffic. Be sure to program in Viper Talkgroup 9567. This is the Catawba County Patch for North Lakes on UASI. This is a very active talkgroup in the summer months with emergencies on the lake. Also, you'll probably want to program UASI for Mecklenburg County. Don't worry about the Mooresville Site, its being shutoff soon due to the Viper Simulcast buildout in Iredell. All the GTR's are being repurposed to Viper.

IS this ALL Viper in NC?

Sorry I have to ask but if you have a SDS200 scanner what do I need to do? Will the SDS200 just keep running or will it need to be reprogrammed?

Thanks for any help!

The Phase 1 scanners that support Phase 2 will not need to be reprogrammed unless they change Talkgroups.
The Uniden 996Xt is not P25 Phase 2 it is Phase 1 only. The Uniden 996P2 is Phase 1 and Phase 2 with paid upgrades for NXDN and DMR.

VIPER is one system throughout the state, so yes it is ALL viper. You should not have to do any reprogramming, it will work just like it does today.
