The white door wouldn't look too bad if it was a traditional black'n'white design w/ both doors being white and the area just above them.

And wow, that reflective tape is ugly...

Rochester Police have the Reflective striping also on the rear of the cruisers. It is an apparent city wide initiative because the fire department also has the high vis design on the rear of all new fire apparatus since about 2003. Des Moines Fire has the Hi Vis on the back of their ambulances... i think the Europeans are on to something, even though it isnt what we typically think of as a good looking vehicle, i think it is something that everyone will get used to and it will grow on people... i think you are going to see it more and more in the coming years as it is shown that more lights on an emergency vehicle are not necessarily better and that there are other things you can do to an emergency vehicle both in tactics, lighting and reflective markings to decrease the all to common incidence of vehicles striking emergency vehicles.

I wouldn't be overly surprised if the chevron markings become a requirement adopted by fire apparatus design standards as well as those for ambulances.

While it may not be the prettiest thing to look at, the safety guy in me says that's an awfully nice thing.

Anyone see any of these new squad cars on the road yet? I saw a CVI truck with the new design today and I thought it actually looked pretty good. Luckily he didn't stop me for an inspection.

It looks to me like they are utilizing the same technology that we are using in racing by wrapping the doors. It is MUCH less expensive and MUCH quicker to apply and remove, without the ramifications of painting.

Thats what we do here.

Most of our Police vehicles have either a silver or white base colour wrapped in reflective. It makes a HUGUE difference to visibility and is much better at night than loading you car up with dazling lights.

How does the cost compare between using lights vs wrapping the vehicle with the reflective stuff.

Do you actually use those for traffic enforcement or do they used unmarked cars? You would have to be a complete moron to speed / run a stop sign or light etc with one of those anywhere around!

Allmost all counties police forces use this livery on their vehicles. Be it local patrol, response vehicles to vans, and Traffic division. All forces have 'unmarked' or 'plain' cars available for covert use.

Ambulance use the same style but with Green/Yellow squares on a (what only can be described as a ) 'bannana' coloured base coat. Fire mostly use Yellow/Red squares on Red base.

The rear reflective livery is designed to help people distinguish the shape of the car, helping them to see the outline better. I believe this is better than bolting 100's of strobes to your car and wonder why people cant see what they are doing whilst driving past!

Oh and to the last question, yes we do still have light bars etc, but don't go too heavy on the lights for the above reason.
