A new state police post will be built along the Indiana Toll Road and 25 troopers added to the payroll to expand the police presence along the tollway, state officials said Wednesday.
The new post just northeast of Elkhart will be used by 70 troopers, two motor carrier inspectors, and 10 state police support staff members. It's set for completion in late spring 2009, and will replace the existing post about 20 miles to the west near the intersection of the toll road and U.S. 31 in South Bend.
The post's primary use will be as a state police base, but it will also provide office and training space for Department of Natural Resources conservation Officers and regional offices for the state Department of Homeland Security and the Indiana Gaming Commission.
"This move will put officers who provide public safety under one roof. It makes sense operationally and fiscally, and we'll improve customer service," Gov. Mitch Daniels said in a statement.
The post's $5 million cost will paid for by the private operator of the toll road, the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company, as specified under its lease with the state. That company will also make annual payments of $6 million to the state police to add 25 troopers to the unit that patrols the 157-mile highway across northern Indiana.
