Good Evening all,
I'm making my way over from 11m and FRS services to HAM and GMRS and need some antenna advice. Like I said I am studying and about to take the test for my tech class. Here is where I am stuck I have a Midland 500 for my GMRS and I am looking at getting a TYT TH 9800 plus radio which is 10m 6m 2m an 70cm. The antenna(s) I have been debating about are the Coment CA-2x4SR VHF/UHF or the Bingfu High gain 62" ham radio antenna. Im not stuck on either one of these, So im open to other Ideas as well. Im looking for a durable antenna that will do what I want or will work best. I would like one antenna that can handle both radio's with the help of a splitter. The antenna will be mounted to a Jeep wrangler that is used daily on road and off road in the high country so it will be hitting tree limbs and such so I needs to be able to take some abuse.
Please let me know what you all think or have had good luck with.
Thanks

The Comet CA-2X4 is popular and works ok across amateur GMRS and MURS. I wouldn't want anything on my truck that says "Bingfu". I've had a couple of TYT TH9800s and hated them after owning a couple Yaesu FT-8900s which most of these clones are targeting. The TYTs are not the same radio and do a lot of annoying things. I also have an Anytone AT5888 and love it, quality and performance is very good and it does VHF/UHF and 220. I found little use for 6m and 10m on the TYT and even my Yaesu FT-8900s and fine 220 more interesting.

What bands do you -really- need?

If you are just getting your technician license, the FM portion of the 10 meter band is outside your permission level. If you plan on upgrading your license, then it may be something to consider. But FM 10 meters isn't really that popular as most are enjoying SSB.

6 meters is awfully quiet. Yes, there are repeaters and FM simplex, but it can be kind of a quiet band.

Usually new hams focus on 2 meter and 70cm. Not trying to steer you away from 10 and 6, just that you may find that you can't use 10 until you upgrade.

I agree with prcguy. Bingfu is the scum that's under the stuff that's at the bottom of the barrel. You can -easily- do better.
Consider that the antenna is the most important part of your system. Finding the cheapest Chinese product shouldn't be the goal. Spend good money on a good antenna and enjoy the benefits. Don't blow that much on a radio and then connect it to the cheapest thing you can find.
