with this video on you tube this is me today trying to program..
Aside from getting a headache watching you bounce around, you are basically ignoring the advice I have given.
1. I said: Do not enter TGID's, and yet you insist on it, and then wonder about letters and numbers. Your system only has numbers, so why are you worrying about it? Entering them will NOT help you receive them any better..
2. When you get to the system menu, you are confused when it asks for what type of Moto system. The online instructions say..select Motorola, which I believe means you do not have to select the type if you have analog and digital. but if it does, select Motorola again.

As for the fact you are 1 hour from guelph, that is a big problem. Since I have no idea where you are, you should look at all the site locations (not the Talkgroups for Minto) and see if one of them is closer. This is exactly why I did not want you to mess with TGID's. You need to find out if you can even receive anything first. If you can't find a site closer, you may need to consider an external antenna. The short rubber duck will not work beyond 10-20 miles under most conditions for frequencies in your system..However, 60 miles is probably too far for even an external antenna.

One thing you can try is to program 142.6200 in any of your conventional systems groups. You should be able to hear digital static, if you are able to receive it at all. If you do, then you know you should be able to hear them in the trunking system you set up.

Yes, Mot is Motorola, so Select MOT and then skip over the type of system to the frequencies. I am not a digital expert, but you may need to select VHF band, Try it both ways. The guys from your area will definitively know the answer. You say you get static, so I assume this is when you programmed 142.6200 in a conventional system. That is good, so it should work if you program the trunking system for Wellington. DO NOT try to program those talk groups. Stay in IDsearch and just see what you can hear. It nothing, then do as Larry says and go to Ontario group. Be sure to say where you are, and maybe they can explain why you are able to get the digital noise 60 miles away. They should be able to figure out whether you have set up your system correctly, and if you should be able to receive the talk groups you listed above.

I wandered over to the Ontario forum, and I found this:
http://forums.radioreference.com/on...ner-bell-mobility-radios-fleetnet-system.html
It is a lot more complicated.than I imagined. You do have to select VHF, and you have to change the band plan. I would definitely ask to be sure this instruction, posted in 2006, is still valid. Shame on me. I should have guessed that a system this big would have a lot of info in the Ont. forum. Larry..thanks

i have found some folks learn with just a little push and then let them play.
that was all he neede. once you hear something, you can play, but if you have a brick/paperweight you loose hope.

You could ask in the Ontario forum, but chances are high that they are new and no one has ID'd them. This is really the fun and challenge of scanning. You need to listen carefully for clues about type of service(PD, FD, EMS etc), and their location. It will take some time and effort, but when you ID them, you can add them to the database so others won't have to go through this process.

Often, you accidentally locked out one or more systems. Look to be sure it is really scanning all systems, and just in case, turn the scanner off/on to erase all temp lockouts. Otherwise, can't think of too many things that would affect VHF reception so dramatically. Do try in different locations in the house, esp higher ones.
As for antenna, I like the Radio shack VHF/UHF but their online site is off the air for now. Go over to Antennas and Associated Hardware - The RadioReference.com Forums Since most of your listening is VHF, I would say the antenna that came with the 396 is as good for VHF as any others, but the folks on teh antenna forum may have some other suggestions.

sounds like me in the back yard

that is how i have to try and hear one county south of me.
next will be aluminium foil on the antenna.
check and make sure all systems/groups are scanning.
the T model does not do the power cycle reset thing.
if you do happen to find a store for amateur radio
pick up a 2 meter, 144 to 148 mhz, or is it metre there, antenna. or a 150 mhz business antenna.
they might help as the stuff you want is in the 140 area.
the next thing is an outside antenna and the some goes for that.
see if you could return it if it does not help.

A quick check for all the weather channels should tell you if there is a problem with the antenna. You should probably hear half of the official weather channels. One should be strong, and the others weaker. Antenna and the connection to the scanner is the most likely thing that would kill your reception on all channels. Depending on your location vs towers, you might only get one, but you should get at least one.
