Since the new uniden scanner soon to be
realeased depends on the database

now would be a good time to send in your
submissions for your area.

Also admins might want to take a look
at forums in there area and see if there
is anything being talked about that is
not in the database.

Maybe a sticky in all forums asking for
member updates.

New Uniden Scanner

All should note that its NOT only for the new Home Patrol (Uniden) but also applies to the PRO-107 and the new upcoming GRE PSR-700 that all will depend to a large extent to an accurate Database. It looks to me that we may be putting "All our Eggs in one Basket" and depending on the the inputs more than we should.

Maybe something needs to be changed here so that we can depend on the inputs.

Two items I have recently looked at leaves a lot to be desired. The listing for the State of Vermont lacks a lot of information that is out there in other places and took a lot of digging for.

The listing for Sarasota, Fl. is lagging now about two weeks behind the times at this point in time.

This is a good point , also someone had brought up that many agencies have requested that certain frequencies not be published or displayed , Does that mean that they are still in the database & will still be downloaded & are just simply not displayed ? or are they actually removed from the database?

A couple things to keep in mind:

1 - per site policy, the only information withheld from the database is information on Federal and Military systems, and that only upon receipt of a written request (on letterhead) from the individual in charge of the system, usually the base or installation commander. The policy does not apply to state and local systems/frequencies.

2 - There may be a lot of information out there on other web sites for various localities (another post mentioned Vermont), but the RadioReference policy is confirmed and verified information only. A simple dump of the FCC database does not count. Nor is information taken from another web site appropriate for submission. This is one of the things that makes RadioReference such a valuable resource, all of the information has been verified by someone.

Yes but a lot of folks just will wait for someone else to submit a entry to the database and it never gets done.

My point is that if a admin reads or keeps up to date with a forum and sees a thread, the admin could contact the member posting and ask then to submit there info.

Will Uniden be compensating RR.com for its dependence on RR's data to make its scanner work adequately? It seems to me as if the manufacturers are looking for free labor from the user community.

No more than the 100 plus people that try to make RR work.
These people will either make HP a scanner for the Casual Listener work or it will be a bust.

*REBANDED*
I think the Home Patrol is a great idea, for both the novice user and the expert. It will be nice to see how it functions and what can be easily locked out by the expert users, etc but keep the novices from screwing it up.

As for the database. I am concerned that the admins are not properly tagging submissions of old frequencies when someone submits an update that a frequency is no longer in use. First, just because a license expires does not mean someting is no longer in use. Second, just becasue some agency has moved on to a newer or higher frequency or a new technology, the old frequency or technology capabilities actually go away - they usually dont.

Instead are removing them, old frequencies should be tagged as "depricated" unless there is compelling evidence that they will never be used again.

I know in my county, the old low band channels have been removed from the db, but upon touring the EOC and varous county Command Post vehicles last week they still have the capabilities on low band if the new systems fail.

Bottom line, the stuff still exists but is seldom used -- so its nice to have the info in the scanner. But at this point I have to refer to my old records because the database is not accurate. The frequenices should be taged as "old" so that people have a choice to import them or not!

THANKS

PS. I guess I will send in some submissions for my county and see how people react.

Database Updates

I slowly stopped sending in verified updates after too many submissions in a row were denied and the reason that was given to me was that though active and verified a certain frequency may have been "too local enough" to be considered to them worth adding. I don't agree that that is a judgement call that should be made by staff because being on the internet anyone from any area will look at it and learn that these channels are out there, also a lot of local level stuff is used as repeaters for multiple things.

Think of it this way. Users contribute info to the RR DB. Users benefit with the RR DB on the Home Patrol, Pro-107, and PSR-700.

I would expand that to include that anyone that uses the db to download and keep their scanners up to date benefits, no matter the model. Even those that use the database just to hand program their scanners benefit from having the db up to data as it is one stop shopping for your local frequencies and trunked talkgroups.

Wondering why the Plymouth County, MA, section of the database was completely redone from what it was? It was setup to list county Police in one table and County Fire in a separate table, now it's reverted back to the older, more difficult way to decipher when using web import. All of the PROPER apha tags were removed. Now, every entry will show as Police Disp or Fire Disp, but it will NOT show what town you are hearing when imported. Not sure why this was done, especially since Scott, Scan Cape Cod, spent a LOT of time editing this so that everything would load in properly when using web import. Look at the Barnstable County section to see how it used to be setup. It worked beautifully. Now, it's not going to.

Looks like Bristol County was set back to the older way as well. Not sure why this was done?

Agreed. The way Plymouth and Bristol Counties are configured now are not conducive to logical programming. I have PM'd the person that decided to do this and await his reply. It took me a considerable amount of time to make sense out of several MA counties, and now someone has reverted to the old method. We need to get on the same sheet of music.

In the interest of understanding and clarity, I don't think this quite defines the current state of systems in the database.

My understanding was there used to be a time when a handful of Military systems were withdrawn. There was some personal interaction between Lindsay and someone else at a radio show (Dayton?) and the result was that the Military systems were put back online pending new letters. I don't think any Military systems are currently withheld.

..but I will go look and I will update with my findings...

The only system I know that has been withdrawn is the Mobile Relay Associates LTR system, which I think is in greater Los Angeles area.

The future will be interesting. Now that Uniden and GRE are dependend upon RR.com data, I'm wondering if they will be more active in defending it from requests to have it removed?

I've submitted many database frequencies in the past, but stopped because there is no incentive. We all submit information, and RR (and now Uniden/GRE) makes money and benifeit from our submissions. While we still have to pay for premimum access, even when we contribute to the frequency data base.

Absolutely. Due to some new products being introduced, it is more important that the database is accurate? Nonsense..

I would expect that GRE and Uniden don't get the database information free of charge either. Most likely there's some level of licensing fees involved, which in turn would help keep the cost of the premium subscription at a lower level than it might otherwise be...
