Nope. The new offering has a combo VFO/function knob, and the squelch is digital, not linear like on the 1080/800/668.

There may be other internal changes as well.

Also, it only runs off 12 volt, the USB port is to charge the backup battery,

Does the 436 get better reception than the 1080? Or does the 1080 better reception than 436?

I personally would like to see a P2 version of the WS1040/1065. Don't change anything but the vocoder and firmware code for P2 and I'd be happy.

I'd have to agree with this as well. Why can't scanner manufacturers just keep things simple ?

Since I have a preference for a full numeric keypad with function keys the WS-1095 is sort of a deal breaker for me. In addition, having to reprogram a WS-1095 from scratch and not being able to import programming data from Win500 is also a huge headache.

I'm also not a fan of the whole frequency database feature given my location and the fact that it appears to be more trouble than it's worth.

Ironic statement since that's exactly what was done with the 800/900 series scanners (which of course includes the 1095) - they simplified the design in an effort to keep it more "user friendly".

Actually, programming is simpler than with any other scanner. There is no particular reason to have a numeric keyboard or function keys, everything is menu driven.

They did in fact keep it simple. YOU want it to be more complicated.

I disagree with that Scott. It's not an iPod, it's a scanner receiver. It really would work much better for many features and functions with a keypad, but unfortunately that was the design direction taken at the time. I suspect the GRE design development would have retuned to the keypad for future designs. It's up to Whistler to learn what the end user likes now. The 1095 was the last fully finished radios before GRE pulled the plug, so the design was pretty much fixed.

In my location the reception is slightly better on the 436 vs. the 1080 (PSR800). P25 decoded voice is about the same between radios.
