• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Okay - I think this is a case of "cannot see the forest through the trees" situation.

I have a DM-1701 with factory firmware on it - not the OpenGD77.

I have a DMR id - I signed up for one.

This radio is confusing to me - but perhaps I would just need to learn to speak it's language.
What is the best resource for someone who needs things explained like I'm a 5 year old.

The blogs and even the documentation I have for it seem to be confusing as Hell!

I would like to connect it to a local DMR repeater - I do have a list of those, that's not an issue.

I think I need a step-by-step with this thing. Some hand-holding in the beginning. It takes me a while for things to sink in.

So, anyone have a good resource that explains this to me like I'm 5?

Any and all help would be appreciated!

Thanks - Glen

In addition to the frequencies, you also need to know the Color Code and Time Slot of any particular DMR repeater. If you can find an existing DMR codeplug for your radio, load it into your CPS so that you can study the structure. This can often help you to understand how to build your own codeplug for your local area. There are also numerous YouTube videos about DMR.

Thanks for all of the good info. I need a way to have it explained to me like I'm 5 years old.
I'm looking for some hand holding for the following:
1. Connect my DMR to a local DMR repeater and just listen - I don't even know how to do that. It's confusing and frustrating as ****.
2. A good resource (please don't just say 'search Youtube') I don't know what I am searching for. I don't even know where to start.
3. A place/resource that explains (in detail - remember, I'm 5) the CPS-DM1701 interface software. The docs that I found are confusing. They don't make any sense. Bad translation maybe
I am sorry for being difficult, but I have been pissing around with this thing for months.
I cannot make any sense of it - perhaps I need a different approach.

1) Do you have the Programming Software downloaded and install on pc?
2) Do you have the programming cable for the DM-1701 to go between radio and pc?
3) Are you able to read your radio from the software?

Yes - I did get that far. I am looking for some handholding to be able to connect to and listen to a local DMR repeater.
I know this is probably irritating most of you, but once I understand what I am doing, I'll stop being such a 3-Badge Parrot. What I am unclear on is the basics.

1) Make a folder on your PC where you can find it. Label it KC1RTD
2) Read the radio then save the original factory codeplug in that folder. Name the CP=codeplug "Original"
With that done you can always go back to factory setting in radio.
3) email me a copy of the repeaters you want to put in radio. look at qrz.com for my email / call sign=kilo juliet four delta hotel foxtrot.
4) I have never fooled with a Baofeng so going to be a slow process but we should be able to get it up so you can hear local repeater if you close enough to it's location.
5) Email me a copy of your factory CP so we can always be on same page.

Good day - I apologize. I've been a little sick with COVID-19 and now I'm back to work.
Perhaps tomorrow, since I hope to work from home, I can take a crack at this.
I apologize for not being timely in my responses folks.
Just shyte timing - that's all.

...and I do appreciate your offering of help. Please don't take it personally that it took me so long to get back to you.
My manners are usually much, much better than that.

Glen,
I emailed you a codeplug this morning. It has the Parrot,NE Wide and NH Statewide TG in it. I hope it is correct. It was built using the KM3T VHF repeater online information. If I did not get it correct maybe someone else can look at it and fix my mistakes.

Hi there - thanks much.
I did manage to get that CP on my radio - however, I still don't know what I am doing.
Now that I have this, I can research on how to use it.
Not quite as simple as a Baofeng UV-5R analog VHF/UHF with CHIRP.

There is a learning curve to DMR. Take your time, ask questions, and research. Eventually it will be second nature to do stuff with DMR but at first it can be a little intimidating.

Without being familiar with that radio I am lost also. With that CP in the radio I think if you turn on radio it will default to the parrot channel on the KM3T channel. I do know looking at the manual the channel knob and the up/down arrow keys I think will let you change the channel. Just turn it own open manual and read and get familiar with the button functions. For DMR to connect to a repeater talkgroup you will have to select the talkgroup parrot,NE Statewide,NH Statewide and give a dead key "Kerchunk" to connect to it.
