Hi and thanks for taking a look. My apologies in advance as I am a newbie here and dont yet own a scanner. I want to start out with something simple just to be able to listen to fire and safety in my geography. How can I tell on the database if these agencies broadcast in analog or digital? I am hoping most are analog so I dont have to spend a lot on my first scanner. Seems like the Unidens for arond $100 would do the trick, but open to suggestions too. Thanks.

No need to apologize for being a newbie, we all started out that way. Welcome luckydog125.

I listen to analog-only first responder comms using the Bearcat 125AT, easy to program, a tad under $100, might fit your bill. But, many comms are now digital so you'll be missing those. I'd check the radioreference database for your area and see what is on analog and digital first, then decide from there. Digital scanners will run beyond $100 though. Stay tuned on this site for additional useful info from other posters regarding digital comms (not my forte). You've come to the right place for assistance.

If you can squeeze it out of the budget, I'd shoot for digital. Many agencies are moving to it. You didn't give your location so it's difficult to make an assessment as to whether you really have to have it. A lot of small agencies are using the same systems (and maybe even the same radios) they used 20 years ago but as things wear out, they upgrade, often to digital.

To actually answer your question, look at the Mode column.

On conventional frequencies, FM, FMN or AM would signify analog. NXDN, DMR, or P25 would be digital.

On trunking systems, look under the Mode column again. A is analog, D is digital.

So everyone can help- A State, County or City would help so we can look at the data base.
Next would be what are you wanting to listen to . Everything ? Police , Fire , Ham, Aircraft , Boating , Rail .... There is allot out there with all thier different modes. You just might need an Ebay Special for $15 to see if you have the bug
no need to spend $100 plus to find your area is in Secret Squirrel mode.
