I'm a complete Newbie in the Union County, NJ area. Looking to scan first and then get my license for emergency preparedness. Lots of confusing info but I'm a quick learner. Thanks for having me aboard.

Welcome to the forum. Do you have a scanner and what type? Union Co is on the NJICS statewide system which is P25 Phase 2. You will need a scanner capable of P25 Phase 2 to receive it.

Just curious, what type of license are you getting for emergency preparedness? Just wondering if it is FCC Amateur Radio license or something else?

Union Co NJ uses a simulcast site. Presently, the only 2 scanners that will reliably receive P25 simulcast are the Uniden SDS100 and SDS200. The SDS100 is the handheld and the SDS200 is the desk/mobile. Other scanners may work, depending on your location. If you know someone else in Union Co, you could have them bring their scanner to your location to see how well it works on the NJICS system. You can also post a thread on the New Jersey forum to check with other members' experiences with receiving Union Co on the NJICS system using various scanners.

I plan on getting the Amateur radio user license. Thank you for the heads up on the correct scanners. So far I have an el cheapo BaoFeng just to screw around but I would like to become more proficient and move up.
