I have a NEXTEL phone and I always know it's going to ring before it actually does due to that noise.

It also makes the noise across my computer speakers.

Ticking, Helecopter sound, and about 100 other names.

Just part of the fun of iDEN.

Lately around here I have been hearing the distinctive ticking & buzzing
noises that GSM phones can cause on several public safety systems.
I guess a lot of the dispatchers have GSM pnones now and the consoles
or headsets seem to be very susceptible to interference.
I would have thought stuff like that would have better EMI protection.

50 Hz is GSM

30 Hz / 60 Hz is TDMA

11 Hz is iDEN

Any phone that uses GSM, TDMA, or iDen will cause that. iDen is the most profound. It seems to mess with anything that has a speaker. It does the same thing to car radios and dispatch consoles.

Place your phone under your your monitor and watch what happens when you get a phone call. I keep my cell under my monitor and I always know when a call is comming in. I see my monitor flicker and hear the thump, thump, thump. in the speakers and on the scanners at least 10 seconds before the phone actually rings.

2 min would not be the same call.

You phone does registration updates occasionally also.

The noise that the Nextel makes on the computer speakers has nothing to do with whether or not you're about to receive a call. Mine does it a lot, even when I don't get a call. The noise comes whenever the phone is in communication with the tower.

being a dj and doing a gig, it would do that through my sound system. I had to get rid of Nexthell........

I also remember when I was visiting someone at the hospital, while using the 2 way it would remotely turn the tv on an off.

I could also walk in to the local drug store (CVS, Walgreens etc) and key up the 2 way and it would make a horrible static sound on their Muzak system. All you could hear was the static and no music.

While listening to the am/fm radio, I alway knew when the phone was going to ring when the clicketys came over the speakers.

It's quite the paradox. Everyone and their mother in public safety wants or already has one... yet at times I've been tempted to hang a sign on the door into the communications area saying "NO NEXTELS BEYOND THIS POINT. VIOLATORS WILL BE BEATEN."
