People probably do use it for skywarn for person to person but not person to ops.

I had Nextel for 2 years and I switched back to Verizon. The Nextel DC feature worked OK for me, but as far as making calls there were some dead zones by me and a lot of times when I go on vacation , depending on where I go , I can't even get a signal (I had a nationwide plan). So I am back with Verizon, should have never left them.

I have nextel, as does the majority of my fire dept. It's used a lot to coordinate efforts without tying up county radio.
As far as skywarn, it'd be okay for spotter to spotter, but the advantage of one big channel is so we know who's seeing what, where, and when.

I no longer have a Nextel and can't tell you the cost but nextel did have a group option just like a big network or talkgroup.

we use it at NWS-MICON between repeater ops for network stuff.. We have a few spotters we also talk to via nextel but official traffic goes over UHF unless its of admin type. I use the group connect feature alot for work. You are limited to using group with nextels only in the same subfleet. So it limits it for people with nextels from other accounts.

It is a great backup and as a trained spotter I can see it being handy for certain skywarn instances. If anyone is interested in assembling some type of group or something feel free to contact me k8dns@hotmail.com
