One thing I don't understand about NJT is why in the world do they use TETRA?? Not only is it not the standard in the US it also doesn't allow them to connect to the police on the same radio which brings up the issue of having to have more than one radio. If police operate on VHF shouldn't they all operate on VHF? Worst case scenario it would be P25 Phase 2.

I believe they chose TETRA because of the enhanced data & GPS capabilities built into the backbone of that network format.

They would have been probably better served by a DMR trunking system in my option, but TETRA is 4:1 TDMA - that's a whole lotta talk paths per single frequency pair.

4:1 is a bit overkill if you ask me but hey, if it works it works.

Does anyone else have trouble hearing NJ Transit PD HQ when they transmit on SPEN 1 (154.68 - CTCSS 131.8)?

The audio is so terrible; I can't figure out what their problem could be. It almost sounds as if the base station is in partial digital mode. Perhaps trouble with the console?

Seems like someone at NJ Transit PD must have read my post. Testing conducted this morning of SPEN 1 with Hudson County Sheriff's Office. All seems to be in order now. It only took months.

Exactly. The system exists for NJTransit Bus Operations (including Light Rail). They needed the expanded functions to support the upgrade to NJTPD/Bus Control's systems, and the MyBusNow tracking app. NJTransit Police have access to the system, but rarely use it.

Someone did and the coax connector was replaced at the console. ;)

They tend to use that frequency when they want to keep the train conductors in the loop I believe.
Train & Engine crews do not have 160.830 in their portables. Hell some of their portables are nearly as old as me. Some guys are still carrying HT1000's or Visars. lol.

Thanks for taking care of the coax connector. Now I can completely understand their SPEN 1 dispatches. It had been that way for months.
