dont know why, but my uniden handheld was locking on a troop A control channel only....i deleted all of my troopA control channels then id scanned and was completely unable to lock on ANY control channels. so i put them back in and restarted the scanner and for some reason it doesnt lock on that troop A control channel rather it acts "normally" and finds troop B and parkway, pike control channels????

any ideas as to why the scanner would lock on only 1 distant control channel???

If you're in Jersey City, the North System, or the Troop B System, is the one you should be listening to. The South System, or the Troop A System, can't regularly be picked up in Jersey City.

As a side note, Joe, have you noticed that they seem to have been having problems on the Troop A & Troop C systems this week? I've heard a lot of "you were scratchy and unreadable" for the last week or so from both dispatch and road units.

They're in the middle of upgrading the microwave backbone in C and A right now. It's a sure bet that there will be hiccups now and then when you are dealing with such a huge system.

On the upshot, you'll be able to hear every TGID in the troop anywhere in the troop when it's all done...

The upgrade is going to take quite some time. I'll ask my source about how far along they are...

Untrue statement. With the NJSP switching to an Omnilink SmartZone system it gives them the ability to have talkgroups be statewide (NorthStar, SouthStar, etc). The The troop dispach talkgroups (Totowa, Netcong dispatch for example) will not be statewide.

And for the system to assign a channel for a statewide call there must be a unit on that system. If no unit is listening to that talkgroup in a system then the system will not assign a channel. That conserves resources. That's why it's called SmartZone.

Troop C cutover to SmartZone operation is scheduled for tonight. Troop A in the fall.

There should be no improvement in RF signal strength after the cutover. The audio should be the same or better in simulcast overlap areas since they are upgrading the uW backbone and using GPS to control the system phasing. The new system provides more accurate phasing that the old system.

Thanks George! I live in an area where I can get Troops A & C at the same time so maybe I'll see an improvement!

I noticed that about every 1 second there would be a click or burst of static on each frequency, including one of the active two control channels. It was confusing my PRO-92, since it uses subaudible data to TrunkTrack Motorola systems. It stopped later yesterday, though.

No. Unless any new talkgroups pop up or change, you'll be safe. BTW, the New Jersey State Police Central System uses a SpectraTAC system, don't they? If they do, will this change with the upgrades?

I believe since the system is going to be digital capable they are switching to AstroTACs.

OK, good. That will eliminate that annoying beep at the end of a transmission.

George,

Thanks for correcting me on that. My only question is - will I now be able to hear the NJTP & GSP from one end of the troop to the other like I can now with Troop B? I've had to keep them out of my TGID lists because over 50% of the time, the transmissions are very poor. I can now hear every toll road transmission on the B system loud and clear since that upgrade was done...

I think those talkgroups are capable of statewide. So, yes you might hear those talkgroups.

I'd suggest having three systems set up with each system containing talkgroups you want to listen to.

B and C have always been set up in totally seperate banks here in my 796 - I'll put the Holmdel & Cranbury TGID's and see how they sound...
