I think for a minute I saw GPS indicated on the upper right corner of the 996 display.

Now it is not dispalyed and with the GPS connected it displays "No GPS Input"

I checked the Garmin unit and a signal is present.

What should I do to the 996 for it to recognized the GPS?

Make sure the GPS unit is locked onto satellites and reporting a fix.

And you want it sending NMEA, is that not correct, UPMan? If it's pushing GRMN (proprietary) format, can the 996 receive that?

Correct, I thought of that on the way home from work. Be sure the GPS is set to send NMEA (several non NMEA options are typically available in the GPS setup menu).

all good questions that I do not have an answer for. it is a Garmin GPS 18 that when connected to the Garmin provided software it is receiving several satellites.

when I connect it by way of the 9 pin connector to the 996 the radio says "No GPS Signal"

it sems like it must have (or at least had) some activity if it was recognizing satellites when connected to the garmin software and that causes me to wonder if I am missing something on the 996 to tell it to allow gps signals

i thought the garmin gps 18 had the right data type right out of the box. would you know how I checked what is has and change it if i need to?

it is just a "puck" and a power cord. is that some thing you can adjust from garmin software and then save it?

I was kinda hopin for plug & play

thanks for your suggestions, I am just scratin my head!

This definately sounds like the GPS's settings since it is communicating with Garmin's software. I'm not familiar with the GPS-18, but from my experience with other Garmin models (12, V, iQue3600) you should be looking for something like a "Settings" screen on the GPS itself. Once that is found, you should see something similar to an "Output" option that will allow you to change the GPS output from "Garmin" to "NMEA".

EDIT: Just went to Garmin's site and looked at the 3 manuals associated with the GPS-18. I sure hope that I am wrong because from what I can see, the GPS-18 was made to work with Garmin's nRoute, and the output can not be changed.

I'm using a GPS18 myself on my 996. It can output NMEA, but for the life of me I can't recall if there's a programming setting or not. My version has the split cable with a 12V powerpoint adapter and a 9-pin serial cable on the other branch.

According to the technical spec, it defaults to NMEA. It can be put in Garmin mode, but cycling power should return it to NMEA (if I am reading that spec correctly).

well I verified that yhe gps will still talk to the garmin software and it still does

I tried powering up and then down several times while connected to the 396 and still no action

I, too, have the garmin gps 15 with the split lead, 1 is a power cord and the other is the none pin

the puck has no settings or adjustments

sounds like the fix might be more parts, hugh?

as in buy something else?

is their an easier way to attach gps to the 996?

what is everyone else doing to connect gps to the 996?

thanks for the help!

Maybe a silly question, but since you haven't mentioned, I'll go ahead and ask: How are you physically connecting to the scanner?

I ask because the answer should be "I just plugged it into the rear port w/no adapters."

Oh, if you've ever used the rear port for something else, maybe you moved it off of its GPS configured settings. Try:

MENU --> SETTINGS --> SET SERIAL PORT --> SET BAUD RATE --> SET REAR PORT

and be sure it is set to 4800 bps.

Thanks, now it works!

good catch!

it is now working.

I missed the part about default setting to 4800 bps.

it was set at something else.

it's in the book I just missed it!

Setting the Serial Port Speed
MENU
Settings
Set Serial Port
Set Baud Rate
Set Front Port or Set Rear Port

Use this setting to control the data rate used for the front and back panel serial
ports. You typically set the front port to match the speed used to communicate with
your PC (default 115200 bps) and the back port to the speed used to communicate
with an attached GPS (default 4800 bps). Note that the back port is male. You may
need a gender changer and a null modem adapter to use a typical DB9 serial
cable from the rear port.
For Serial Port Speed (Baud Rate), select from
4800 bps
9600 bps
19200 bps
38400 bps
57600 bps
115200 bps
OFF

Thanks for the help!

You probably won’t need this now, but, if you ever need to check or change any settings on the Garmin GPS 18, you’ll need to use the Sensor Configuration Software (SNSRCFG).

Instructions for it’s use are in Appendix E of the GPS 18 Technical Specification available from the link in UPMan’s post.
