Noticed that ap25 channels were not being decoded in a custom search mode until I disabled ctcss searching. Is this normal?

Since P25 channels can't have CTCSS that's probably why...

What about dual-mode Quantar configurations?

You should be able to program a scanner for PL + ASTRO, just like a real Motorola radio. I don't know why Uniden and GRE don't understand this.

But when you're searching or in CC mode you don't know what to expect. Anything and everything can be either one.

Then buy a real Motorola radio. Stop whining about what Uniden scanners can't do.

From page 88 of the BCD996T PDF Owner's manual.

"Note: The scanner does not detect or decode a P25 digital signal if the channel or search has CTCSS/DCS search turned on."

With outrageously priced programming software (if they will even sell it to you), and restrictions such as no rx only and the need for a system key for trunked systems, Motorola is at best not suited for the monitoring hobby. At worst hostile toward it.

If they ever put up a P-25 ham repeater in my area, I'd buy an Icom, Kenwood, Bendix/King, or Vertex Standard.

In the meantime, my AOR equipment, and trunker.exe, demodulate any unencrypted P-25 used locally, making up for everything my BC796D lacks.

Definitely hostile to it. I was at a Motorola digital presentation last week. They are going to start selling low cost encryption on some of their radios in order to encourage systems to block scanning.

I think Icom uses DStar, which is their proprietary digital format. I don't know about P-25 capable ham radios.

Note to f0r: I received your offensive PM and have forwarded it to the webmaster. You might be hearing from them.

you bet! more money for mot.

The new encryption (if you want to call it new..) is called ADP (Advanced Digital Privacy) which is software based DSP style encryption. This means no additional hardware is needed - i.e. UCM. Keys are entered in via CPS, no hardware keyloader is used. Just pay motorola, and they will flash the XTS5000 with this feature.

Moto sure could use the money...The CEO has been in trouble for not making any money.

The radio business is largely driven by homeland security money now. Cellphones are the only other business they have left.

They learned a long time ago that software is making more of a profit than the hardware.
