• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

a buddy of mine sent what looks to be a screen shot from here regarding the discontinuation of support and parts for the XG-100P radio. Hoping @TDR-94 or others can comment on this. Just looking ahead and wondering if something goes south w/ this radio how would one get repair or tech support.unnamed.png

By and large, you don’t. When the radio was in production or at least still supported, you still had to send it to TAC, since it was developed in Rochester (military secrets shhhhhhhh…). There were never any third party repair shops and parts were limited to things like antennas, knob caps, and belt clips.

Things regarding service seem to maybe be changing though. It’s not uncommon for a company to hold service near and dear until it’s outdated ‘enough’ to start getting rid of service related parts.

New London Tech now holds most spares and who knows, perhaps will offer service in the future… whether they offer service to individuals like most of us is certainly unknown, but I can see them supporting municipalities that have quantities of radios before offering their services to hobbyists.

Bottom line for a that you should not buy the radio at this time if having a clean path to service is important to you.

I’m running a couple XG-100P radios with no issues with any of them. I even added Phase 2 TDMA feature string to one of them. New London Technology is a good source for parts. Rock solid radio.

Mine works perfectly as well… however, there are many here that will not agree with your reliability report… I think that there are so many variables when buying secondhand that it’s impossible to predict how reliable any particular radio will be unfortunately…

On the one hand, it served many agencies well for a long time. On the other, it was a PITA for at least some of those sysadmins!

I think it’s just easy to forget how old it is, which is a testament to its design imo!

These radios can be wonky and are long in the tooth. It's fine if one gets one for a couple hundred bucks, but if one bricks, L3H won't touch it. Seeing these go for hundreds even over a grand is absurd but hey, far be it from me to tell a fool to not blow his wad on something that can become an unsupported paperweight.

Kind of rethinking my relationship with my XG-100P. I bought it for the versatility, functionality and robust build. Mine has been perfect but nothing lasts forever. Maybe I’ll sell it and change platforms.

Hopefully you didn't overpay. If not, just enjoy it until it dies. Then it can serve as a shelf queen, paperweight, or target practice. All LMR is going to "cellphone" life cycles. Even the new APX N series appears to be set for a 5 year life cycle with virtually no serviceable (outside of sending a radio to the MSI depot) parts.

All the manufacturers are going that way.

I hear ya. I like the 200P… the only reason I’d switch is to get a VP8000 and have DMR and P25 in the same unit. It’s physically larger and heavier than a 200P and Kenwood doesn’t offer anything close to the XL-ESM that L3H makes.

Ya… really glad the 200P has an easily changeable front faceplate which includes the screen, keypad, etc. Hopefully that will extend the the serviceable life of the platform!

Whatever you switch to is going to be a couple thousand extra to match the 100p feature-wise. APX 8000, XL-200P, VP 8000... You're not going to find a cheaper multiband P25 radio than the 100p. Use it until you can't and maybe by then the other models will have come down in price.
