Thanks to the moronic brain trust, the scheduled outage during severe weather season affecting 5 transmitter sites will be taking place with severe weather now being forecast for Monday and Tuesday next week, fortunately its only a marginal risk at this time. Personally, this home has redundancy as far as severe weather goes, except for the over night hours when my wife and myself are asleep and we depend on the weather radio to keep us warned. Here is what the NWS Topeka posted:

System Upgrade

The National Weather Service in Topeka, KS will be conducting a required, scheduled update to their Advanced Weather Interactive Processing system (AWIPS) from June 16nd through June 18th.

During the time of the update, forecasts operations will be conducted by our back-up office in Wichita, KS to minimize any potential interruption to services. No impacts to our core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected during this period.

The NWS Topeka (KTWX) radar will remain operational and its products will continue to be distributed as normal. The NWS Topeka office will remain open and staffed at all hours throughout this update period to answer public and partner phone calls, and additional functions that can be completed while our AWIPS is upgraded.

However, limited impacts will occur to the following services:

NOAA Weather Radio Transmitters:
All NOAA Weather Radio Transmitters maintained by NWS Topeka will be off the air through the time of the update. This includes the following transmitters:
Topeka (WXK91 - 162.475 MHz)
Concordia (WXK94 - 162.550 MHz)
Abilene (WXL71 - 162.525 MHz)
Blue Rapids (KZZ67 - 162.425 MHz)
Halls Summit (KGG98 - 162.425 MHz)

AWIPS-dependent products on our web page, weather.gov/topeka: Any graphic or text that relies on our AWIPS for generation and/or distribution will not be available on our web page. An example is

The forecast office in Topeka, KS will remain open and staffed through the period for public and partner phone calls and additional functions that can be completed without AWIPS. During periods of planned or unplanned outages it is important to have multiple ways to receive warning information. These alternative sources include: local television/radio, and weather apps on your mobile device.

Presuming that the apology was indeed sincere... a loss would be for ever. Did you have weather radio coverage when the metro was dealing with its tornado warnings a few weeks ago....just asking. Some from JOCO Ks. were complaining that they did not receive any warnings from the NWS on their JOCO alert phone app. yet some that had traveled to other states, with the same app., received the warnings for Johnson Co. just fine.
