I have been hearing some traffic on the San Diego RCS system sounding a little strange. By strange I mean the audio goes into a digital mode sounds weird. I have even heard the SO in San Marcos ask the dispatcher to repeat the transmission because the radio went into digital garbel. Anyone one else hear this and what causes it to happen.

I haven't heard the digital distortion, but the last week or so have heard what sounds like open mike, open squelch static.Goes on for 3-5 seconds. I have heard it on San Marcos dispatch and few other TGs I can't recall off hand.
Typically that indicates a single transmitter is flaky. With 10 sites and 19 channels in the cell, it would help if I knew what area you are in (major intersection is fine).
It may be the Carlsbad (Encinas Power plant) or San Marcos. I've heard it in both San Marcos and Carlsbad, but last few days in Carlsbad (near Airport and toward I-5/coast).
Been around 78 and Rancho Sante Fe rd, Oceanside blvd and College ave.
Was there a TG ID with it?
San Marcos dispatch is 34672, but I have heard it on others. I thought it was just me but willl pay more attention now.
