Hey guys;

I'm travelling to Nova Scotia (Halifax to be specific) in the coming weeks. I'm curious as to what frequencies/talkgroups I should be listening to...

From the looks of RR, the Aliant TMR system covers the RCMP for the province - has all the RCMP switched to this? If that's the case, it seems pretty easy to listen.

The areas I'll be in are Halifax County, Lunenburg County and possibly Hants County.

I can't seem to find any listings for EMS in any of the areas however.

Any help you guys could provide would be awesome... thanks!

I'll give you an early Welcome to Nova Scotia :)

The province's EMS system goes under the name Emergency Health Services, EHS for short. And yes, the RCMP has completely moved to the TMR in NS, so they'll be pretty easy to monitor.

Some information you'll find useful.

For EHS, you'll want to program all of the listed talkgroups medic provided; Central 1 is the talkgroup used in the Halifax area, for Lunenberg County West 2 is the talkgroup. Hants county is split between the West 1 and North 1 talkgroups. Central 1 uses TAC 1 as a tactical channel, West 1 and West 2 share TAC 3, and North 1 uses TAC 2 (shared with North 2). CB 1 and CB 2 use TAC 4. And of course the AMT AIR is the helicopter, call sign is Lifeflight.

Halifax has its own police, Halifax Regional Police, covering Halifax, and the nearby city of Dartmouth, town of Bedford and immediate surrounds. You'll want to have all of their talkgroups entered (found in the database).
For RCMP, each detachment has its own talkgroup, listed in the database. Since you'll be in Lunenburg and Hants counties, you'll want the Enfield, Kings, Windsor and Lunenburg, detachments. RCMP detachments in the Halifax area (specifically the Lower Sackville and Cole Harbour detachments) use the Halifax Regional Police talkgroups, and are dispatched by HRP dispatchers.
I'm not sure where in Lunenburg or Hants Counties you'll be, but the towns of Bridgewater and Truro both have their own police services. Truro is on the trunked system, talkgroup 17824 - Bridgewater has a VHF repeater on 159.09 (might also be simulcast on talkgroup 656, haven't been there in a while to find out).

Halifax Regional Fire, in the Halifax area, has a bunch of talkgroups listed in the database. Paging is on VHF and can be found here.
For areas outside of Halifax, check out this page from the Maritime Scanning Site, it's a list of repeater frequencies used by various departments, sorted by county. Excellent list. Note that in that list, Lunenburg County would be under South Shore. Also if you look in the database, there's a bunch of talkgroups under Emergency Services like EO-W1 and EO-W2..3..4 etc, those are used by a few departments as well (EO-P2 is used by the EMO radio technicians)

Hope that helps.

Hi HFX Chris. I want to start scanning the Valley in Nova Scotia. Everywhere from Windsor to Waterville Fire Departments as well as the EHS dispatch (not TMR, I know they are in the 800's frequencies).

What scanner will I need? How can I find the EHS 800's frequencies?

Thanks!

Hey macbookpro. Do you by any chance own a MacBook Pro? :)
Alll fire departments in the valley have their own VHF repeaters, as well the province owns a few VHF repeaters which are shared between departments. There are also talkgroups on the TMR that some departments use... so it's kind of a mixed bag for fire departments. Some departments use only VHF, some use a combination of VHF and the TMR... and I don't really know who uses what (I'm in Halifax).
EHS on the other hand is entirely on the TMR.

If you want to hear EHS, at the bare minimum you need a trunking scanner. If you want to be able to listen to all fire departments all the time, you'll need a trunking scanner. My recommendation is therefore a trunking scanner. You could get an inexpensive one off ebay for less than $100 which should keep you going for a few years, when the province upgrades the TMR infrastructure, requiring us all to buy new expensive digital scanners. :(

Now whether you'll hear everything from Windsor to Westville...depends. On the TMR you will, but the small fire department VHF repeaters, maybe, but I doubt you'll hear the ones that are farthest. I assume you're somewhere in between, like Kentville or New Minas.

Let me know if I can clarify anything for you!
