I know this is probably dumb and obvious but I’m finally getting around to getting a radio to listen to some local stuff.

My question is, if I only program Fort Worth Layer 1, will I be able to hear all talk groups in the list? For example, if I load everything necessary for FTW Layer 1 Site 1, will I be able to hear Southlake for example? Or do I need a separate zone for NE Tarrant County site?

No
You need both Ft Worth Layer 1 and Ft Worth layer 2.
Layer 1 is used mostly by Fort Worth PD.
Layer 2 is used by Fort Worth Fire Dept and most of the smaller cities and county agencies.

FT Worth PD has separate ‘backup’ talk groups to use on Layer 2 if Layer 1 was offline. FT Worth FD and many of the other county and smaller cities have backup TGIDs for using Layer 1 if Layer 2 is out of service.

Additionally, Arlington, Hurst, and Mansfield have separate sites that they use instead of FW Layers 1 & 2. The Northeast Tarrant County site carries cities in the northeast portion of the county, including the H‑E‑B cities, along with Grapevine, Southlake, and other adjacent cities and towns. So, yes, you do need the Northeast Tarrant County site if you want Southlake.

Remember that Layers 1, 2, as well as most of the sites for Arlington and the other stress with designated sites are all simulcast.

That is a great explanation. Now it makes perfect sense to me. I appreciate your time.
