From what I can read, it seems to be some kind of notification association, something like the fire department gong clubs that are out. This one, however, seems to have taken things almost to the whacker level...

They're mostly LE wannabes who think they have some kind of special rights due to their affiliation with an "official" group. They've been in operation for a while. Most people just ignore them.

Thats what i thought. I am pretty sure one of its members got a trunked radio zapped (most likely by a federal system) in the NYC area...and came over to another board and acted like a d*ck over it.
In his profile were indicators that he may be affilated with this group..
I'd imagine that giving someone a heads up over there would be pretty much useless..
Anyone know the freq and pl's they work off of? May make for some interesting listening when I am down in the city

OOOOOOKKKKKK....i still dont get it, what do they do for public saftey that scanners and authorized communications equipment can't do?....hmmmm...not to mention scanners

Back in the 90's, there were a bunch of "notificaition" groups mostly made up of fellow firefighter, photographers etc. They would run on a few GMRS repeaters and alpha pagers.
Many have since folded due to the popularity of Nextel, and the low cost use of the 1-way or 2-way pagers. Some radio groups are active. Some of the guys on the NYCW system from what I understand think they ARE real public safety workers and go over the top.

I happen to be one of the folks that listens to Citywide 1 New York's frequency on a professional basis.
Your suggestion that "authorized communications equipment" is a viable alternative to monitoring C1NY is not helpful because I leave all of my authorized equipment parked on the channels my units will be calling me on. While my authorized equipment does have scan capability, I opt not to use it because my first priority is to serve the needs of my field units.
As to your suggestion that a scanner is a viable alternative...I will not argue that a scanner is an essential piece of equipment; in fact, I use at least two when working. The problem is that with so much to monitor in a city as vast as New York, having an extra set of ears listening - and those listeners reporting anything of note - is helpful in keeping tabs with what's going on in all five boroughs.
Don't misunderstand me. I do not rely on transmissions made over C1NY as gospel. They could have misheard another agency's radio traffic just as easily as I can; not to mention that when the heat gets turned up and I need to truly focus on what is going on - the first radios to get muted to reduce distraction are the C1NY monitors followed by the primary scanner, then by the secondary scanner.
Simply, all notification networks are resources - tools, in other words. The end users, be it public safety employees or free-lance photographers looking to make a buck after shooting some film at a good pin job, use the tools available to them as they see fit. If one doesn't find a need for their services or thinks the network members are wanna-bes, that's fine too. Delete the frequency from the scan list - end of story.

Well put. I'm not a fireground photographer, never was...never will be. I only shoot posed 'delivery' photos of fire apparatus. I don't need CW1NY for that. I do listen to both CW1NY as well as Metro Fire Photographers in NJ both on and off duty from my job as an emergency services dispatcher just to keep up with what is going on the tri-state area. Unlike most dispatchers I know and work with I enjoy listening to scanners even when off-duty. Sure, they do make mistakes on occasion, and I have heard editorials on how incidents are being handled, but for the most part they're a reliable tool.

So is CW1NY a viable listening channel to monitor events in the Tri-State Area with a Scanner in Suffolk County, New York ? And is 461.2250 MHz (PL 167.9 Hz) the correct frequency for CW1NY ?

From what I understand there are two different groups in NYC that used to be one! One group uses 453.0000 and the other group -uses 461.2250. I know the "official" Citywide NY uses 453.000, but I don't know what buff group is on 461.2250 any more. I still have it in my scanners and it's active, I just don't know what group.

What is the difference between "453.0000 - Citywide Radio New York (CWRNY) - PL 167.9 and 461.2250 - Citywide 1 New York (CW1NY) - PL 167.9 Hz" and are either worth the time to monitor?

It at one incident one group may have a member giving progress reports directly from the scene while the other group may be monitoring radio traffic over a channel that the opposite isn't, so each may offer a different prespective to the very same event, therefore I monitor both.

That's to be expected. 453.000 is a business frequency. And, just like on public safety frequencies, it's rare to find an "exclusive" user of a given frequency. That's why PLs (and DPLs) were invented to begin with - so that co-channel users would not have to hear each other.

I would say that Citywide 1 NY i more active and more professional of the two.
CW1NY has made a restriction that you must be involved in some kind of public service (ie fire police, ems etc) to be a member, although that rule is of late and prior some regular civilains joined.
CW1NY also has a killer traffic guy, I believe he works for Westwood One Media, who is basically the only outfit doing trafic nowadays.

But as far as monitoring CW1NY on 461.2250, is it a fact that membership has nothing to do with it ? Can any person with the means to monitor 461.2250, do so without being in the "CLUB"? And does the same hold true for CWRNY on 453.0000. Lastly, would there be reception problems to monitoring either from Suffolk County?
