No.
That "Morse code" is the station's licensed call sign, and transmitting such automatically and periodically is mandatory by the FCC, and has been done for a number of years now. It's also done verbally by the dispatchers, but a lot of times they're too busy to do it.

It's usually transmitted without a PL tone, so if your using the PL for the frequency you won't hear it. If you're using the PL and hear it, it must be a mistake, or something that the FCC thought of.

Cool. Thanks for the response guys. I have heard that occasionally on FDNY dispatch frequencies. I just can't recall ever from NYPD. Way back when I got my first scanner in 93 all the departments around here (New London) used it. Not so much anymore. Before I knew anything about radios or scanners I asked a guy that worker in the public works department about what it was. He told me that it was so that when the dispatcher would hear it when comms were slow and it would keep them awake 🤣

Rich you hearing NYPD from NL? If so what are you picking them up on or is it an app? Some public safety around here still broadcast the identifier as Morse though as was said remove the PL on the RX and you will hear it. QV and ValleyShore come to mind.

Yesterday I heard it on a app. I travel often to nyc. I also do pick up nyc during the summer on 95 especially starting around Westbrook. Yeah some still do broadcast the identifier, just not a many as when I first started listening. First time I had ever heard it was way back on all of New London's frequencies. And back then also on many Long Island frequencies. Funny thing comes to mind. I remember on 154.845 which is a PD on the east end, the identifier would come on and a unit or dispatch would key up in the middle of it. Then the identifier would start over and if they kept talking over it, it would start over and start over again and again. Sometimes it seemed never ending lol. That was unique to that department's system though. Must others would just get cut off and not restart.
