They usually call them out by rank. For example, "102 lieutenant" or "102 Sargeant"

102 is the command and the following is the rank.

Also the patrol units go by sectors. So Adam, Charlie, etc. So "102 Adam" is the command followed by the patrol sector.

Highway units are split into 4 divisions.
Highway 1 - Manhattan & Bronx
Highway 2 - Brooklyn
Highway 3 - Queens
Highway 5 - staten island

Highway also investigates fatal car accidents, they have a unit called CIS (collision investigation squad)

Their callsigns usually reflect their division, so you will hear them as "highway 301" on the radio

Hope this helps.

I believe I've heard highway bosses come over the air as "Highway 1 lieutenant" etc but I never spent much time monitoring their division

I heard a rumor that NYPD traffic was supposed to take over highways low-priority jobs like 53 properties and disable vehicles. I know there's a pilot program in place for those jobs in Manhattan, they use citywide 3 I believe

If you get into a small fender bender with another POV (non commercial/non-rental) and both parties remain on scene in a safe area and both vehicles are drivable; 911/central will advise u to exchange information and that they no longer do accident reports for these situations
