Has anyone heard anything related to the plane they are supposed to have in the air?
I'm sure I've posted this before, but I have no problem doing so again. The OPP only have three aircraft, a fixed wing aircraft in Thunder Bay, and two rotary wing aircraft (helicopters) in Sudbury and OPP HQ in Orillia. If they need additional coverage for the fall drug interdiction operations, they lease them short term as needed (and as budget permits.)
From the OPP's own website
http://www.opp.ca/specresteams/opp_001223.html "The fleet consists of a Pilatus PC12/45 operating from a base in Thunder Bay, plus two Eurocopter S355F2R TwinStar helicopters operating from bases in Sudbury and Orillia."
As Fleetnet is not aircraft friendly (too many sites would be accessed simultaneously) they use SIM11 (148.765 MHz.) and I have heard CF-OPP on this channel. I have never heard the other chopper, CF-OPS as the Sudbury unit rarely visits Eastern Ontario. They carry FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared Radar), but only when necessary, as it it is large and bulky, with a large external sensor plus a display that takes up lots of room inside the cabin.
Keep in mind that, being aircraft, they will also be operating on the appropriate aeronautical frequency (UNICOM, MF, etc.) in the 118 - 136 MHz. range for the area they are in. Refer to the appropriate Transport Canada / Nav Canada publications or the Database here. They will identify themselves using their "tail numbers" (actually "tail letters" in Canada) CF-OPP / CF-OPS. On SIM-11 they will instead use a tactical callsign like "Chopper 1" for example.
Hope this helps.
