Keep one thing in mind here, If it is a paid on call dept or volunteer dept they are all keeping the existing system up and running. There is no paging available on open sky.

That is the part I don't understand, why would you spend money to fund "2" systems?

There was plenty of resistance from the northern part of the county in the beginning with the fire dept's, but they have finally come back on. My understanding is that they will tone and dispatch as they currently do, fireground will move to open sky on scene.,
For the "table top hobbist" you're screwed for the chaser and fire scene guys etc, they will still be there and have the scoop!

From what I have heard, some of the departments are "joining the system" but operations will not change. The will still tone, dispatch, and do fire scene ops on their current vhf or uhf channels and are only getting opensky for mutual aide purposes. And when the system is eventually up and running, you can bet a short time later a scanner will be in the works, if I remember correctly wasn't the MPSCS once unmonitorable? So just give it time.

Too bad Oakland County wasn't smart enough to do what the city of Warren did.

I doubt that Madison Heights, Hazel Park, Ferndale and the few others that didn't join the other system will join this one. I don't think they are that stupid to fall for it now.
They were smart for not joining the old system. Those departments don't have a good working relationships Oakland County nor the Sheriff's Office.

Those departments are part of "Oakway" The combined Oakway departments share in equipment and training in Hazmat and Tech rescue and such. I am certian that they WILL join in the opensky system because of this Oakway agreement.

Don't get me wrong. I wish Oakland County went with either 1. the MPSCS or 2. The 800 system that downriver wayne county has. Good point brought up about patch with non open sky departments. Interesting to see how that pans out. At $4000 a prep, it better be worth it.

OpenSky in Oakland County

So ... how many of you folks actually know whats going on in Oakland County and how many of you are just spreading meaningless dribble and innuendo from other sites or Motherola/MPSCS patsies?

I spoke to a officer today thats on the insight committee and also part of the testing and he said most of the wait was because of the approval of the freqs. Seems Oakland decided to go to freqs that were not approved yet. Which in anycase still doesn't escuse the excessive amount of money and years that it has taken to get this system up and running. He also says that the portable he has works great and has good range and so far hasn't been able to locate a dead spot in his city or anywhere near him.

Either Oakland County is milking the people and taking their money or MA COM is milking Oakland County. Oakland complained about how much money the State System costs and that it's X of dollars a year per radio to use the system when this project has been on going for almost what 8 years now and still it isn't up and running 100% yet. Oakland always has to be different from the rest of the state and if its going to be that way then when an emergency happens and they can't get no one because only their radios work in their county then no other counties should bail them out. Let them use a phone or carrier pigeon to get comms out there.

Also the officer that i spoke to on the phone said there is software that will allow the opensky radios to transmitt on the MPSCS but its an added cost per radio and that so far only the Sheriff's Corrections transport vans will have it since they travel all over the state.

OC has been notorious for dragging things out, milking the money from their people and giving half brained and moronic replies to the citizens questions so why would they start being honest with them now about this system.

BTW at least the MPSCS Patsies system works, has worked, is cheaper and has been running since 1994 now. Remind us again how many millions and millions of dollars were wasted on this system for how many years now? Yep patsies sure enough......

Closed Sky

Since it is now a few years behind schedule I wouldn't worry too much about monitoring it. Now that Chief Hollywood Dwyer is retiring from Farmington Hills the county is losing one of the big supporters of the system.

They will just add a few more dollars to your phone bill under the guise of "Enhanced 9-1-1" and pay for a different system. Or just continue to dump more money into it. Seems the MPSCS system wasn't to their liking when they tested it with 1 tower in operation stating the hand held coverage was no good. So they added 30 some tower sites so the Falling Sky System would work. Some comparison eh? Even with one tower the MPSCS system worked, 30 some additional towers the MPSCS system would have worked with 100mW radio.

Residents should find out who voted for it and vote them out of office. One excuse after another explains why it isn't up and running 100%

Wireless Oakland

It looks like Wireless Oakland will be another 8yr+ project also. I bet they never get wireless Oakland up and running except in a few select cities. I heard it is running in Royal oak, but it's very slow.

The Sky is Falling

Maybe that is how they will get the Sky is Falling system to work. They will use wireless access points in place of the 36 towers they spent millions on. That way they can increase the phone rates again for "Enchanced 9-1-1" charges. It's pretty easy to just pass along an increase to residents now that they developed the "Enhanced 9-1-1" chagres for phone bills. No need to vote on it anymore. Perhaps they will use this method for law maker pay raises next. Oh wait they are already the 2nd highest paid law makers in the nation.

It's a shame that you radio knowledgeable folks in Oakland County can't just put the brakes on a radio system that you will not be able to hear if it ever gets up. How about some concise letters to the Oakland Press from Oakland County RESIDENTS pointing out the money mis-spent, the technical hurdles still to come, and how MSP's system(which you can hear) is the greatest technological marvel since Marconi tickled a long wire.

Writing letters to the Sheriff is going nowhere folks. And I have seen folks on this website say they are going to do that. You need to write to the paper and get them published. You need to wake up the general populus as to just how many pennies have already been thrown in this money pit. That's the ticket. Us scanner enthusist outside the county can't do it for you, we are not residents. No one will listen to us.

The time has come for you residents of the county to quit whining and step up. I know that sounds means, but geez whiz guys. You know darn good and well that if you sat down and wrote a well crafted letter to the Oakland Press, explaning like you know what you are talking about, all the tribulations and failures and money spent so far, and create a dazzle and baffle example of how MSP's system is the Sterling Standard of Commnications (ok, so you gotta fib a bit). You folks in Oakland County should be pulling out all the stops to get the system you CAN hear used in Oakland County, instead of just posting on this website. Wander over to Pennsylvania's postings. Plenty of examples of OpenSky failed coverage and equipment malfunctions that will help your case when you write the Oakland Press.

Fight Fight Fight to ditch the system you won't be able to hear. Isn't that what scanner monitoring is about. To be able to hear what you are monitoring?

Sorry for getting beligerant, but I just can't help it :)

Yes, when and if they ever get Open Sky running I will be disappointed that I can't monitor it, but thats not the issue. The issue is the huge waste of money and resources for some crap that doesn't even work right (yet). If privacy was the issue they could have just ran full time DES-XL or AES encryption on the current Motorola 800 sys. At least the current sys works. 8yrs to install a radio system? wth
