I heard this live on the scanner today. Just before noon today two Mammoth Lakes police officers responded to a disturbance in front of the Mammoth Lakes Branch of the Mono County Library located near the junction of Meridian and Sierra Park Road. The officers encountered a man who was yelling and threatening the officers with rocks. I don't know the size of the rocks and I don't know if the subject charged the officers. The next thing I heard is "shots fired, subject down." I then heard one officer call for medical, code 3. Neither paramedic unit (Medic 2 from June Lake and Medic 3 from Mammoth Lakes) assigned to the south end of the county, were available. I don't know what type of situation they were in. The Mammoth Lakes FD basic life support ambulance responded and was cleared to enter the scene. Shortly after I heard them tell Mono 1 (S.O. Dispatch in Bridgeport) they had CPR in progress and were trying to stop bleeding from GSWs in the chest. Neither officer was injured.

There have been a couple of very short press releases since then. The only info given is the subject is deceased and that the California Department of Justice would be doing the investigation. This portion of town as all three (elementary, middle and high) schools, the community college, the library and a county school office and the Mammoth USD within a short distance. No lockdowns were initiated as this incident was over before this could be accomplished.

I assume the officers have been placed on administrative leave.

I've lived in the county for over 42 years and I don't have that great of a memory in my advancing age, but I don't remember an officer involved shooting prior to this. There might have been one, but I'm not sure if the suspect was hit or not. This is a question for local newspapers to ask of the County Sheriff or Mammoth PD chief.

Wow hard to believe that would happen in that town. I nearly died of pneumonia and altitude sickness there in the 1990's. Great hospital. I spent 3 days of my vacation there. the pulmonologist was great.

That's pretty standard for an OIS. I wonder if the subject was 5150?
Mammoth Lakes is one of the least likely places I'd expect to hear about such an incident.

It can happen any time and anywhere. When it happens infrequently it is hard to remain vigilant. It takes frequent shooting drills at the gun range north of Bishop to stay in practice.

I'm glad the hospital gets your thumbs up. It is even a better facility now. Unfortunately, I've been a regular recipient of their services. I've had a couple of accidents, one a slow speed bicycle accident and a near paralyzing event when I fell off a ladder. I spent 5 weeks in Reno on that on that one. The physical therapy facility is outstanding. I've had some surgeries and colonoscopies there too.

It is too late in the week for an article in either of the two local newspapers to see if they were given any more information about the shooting. It will be another wait and see effort.

When I ended up there it happened that some time before, Bill Bixby's son had died of a breathing related problem while on a ski vacation in Mammoth Lakes. So the hospital seemed to react with a lot of urgency when I presented myself. There is a high level of volcanic carbon dioxide in some areas. I was pushing to get released and back down to sea level. Admittedly I was not in top shape when I flew from sea level, (Miami) because I had an infection going on.
