A Penn Hills police officer died of gunshot wounds last night after responding to a home where a second man was found shot to death inside.
Police would not identify either victim last night or early this morning. Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said the officer was gunned down, apparently with an assault rifle, as he sat in his car awaiting backup outside 201 Johnston Road.
Officers found the other man dead of gunshot wounds inside. Supt. Moffatt said the officer did not shoot the other man, but he wouldn't reveal any other information.
The shootings occurred just before 8:30 p.m.
