A new antenna was installed at the top of the Timmins water tower. The verticle portion oval is a smaller version of a VHF trunking series. Not sure what band ... have to get a pic on here for the experts to figure out

It's a stack setup like a VHF trunking antenna system, but the loops are smaller.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a trunking antenna.

What you've probably got is a UHF version of the 210c4 better known as a 310c4.

You guessed it, I thought those were a single antenna and were stacked on each other. Are they directional ?

A single antenna would be a 210C or a 310C.

Yes, they can be somewhat directional depending on loop spacing and position.

What are the square flat antennas ... and can you receive those transmissions.

Sorry, those flat antennas only transmit encrypted.

...in all seriousness, an antenna doesn't really give you an idea as to what is being transmitted. The same antenna can transmit analog, digital, encrypted, data, etc... The only thing the antenna would be able to tell you is (roughly) the frequency. IE, Low Band, VHF, UHF, etc...

Thanks, and that was my next question as to how you figure that out as to what frequency they may or may not be on ... back to my SEARCH button...

Those are most often very directional microwave antennas, used to connect two points. In many cases they're multiple channel digital circuits and not really scanable. To receive them you not only would need to find their frequency, but also be directly in their path (being off only a few degrees may make the signal too weak to receive). Once those are met, you'd need to find what modulation method they use, encryption, etc.
