Did all Middlesex county fire departments have station numbers? When did they stop using them?

I used to volunteer in Highland Park. We used our station number when a call came in and someone was manning the radio inside the station. We could then call Station 37 over the radio and request additional resources and such.

I never heard these numbers used. They arent used like other counties where they are dispatched by the county or share frequencies. I think Union County used to use station numbers too

I’ve really only ever heard metuchen use their number when they call the firehouse they say station 47, we have ours lettered on the apparatus but have never used it, we use our Somerset county number more when responding M/A

Haven't listened much lately, but can confirm (as Ansky noted) that Highland Park VFD (not Dispatch, but the Stationhouse) would identify as "Station 37" over the air.

Were all Middlesex County fire companies dispatched on the same channel at one time?

No. As discussed in a separate recent thread 33.82 was a common channel among a good handful of municipalities but not all and, to your question, dispatch was localized without a cohesive numbering system across the county. There was that list of countywide numbers established at some point, and presumably still extant, but seldom used with most local numbers not conforming.

Monroe (all three departments) Jamesburg, Spotswood, Plainsboro, Cranbury all use a station number.
Plainsboro and Cranbury do NOT use the original station numbers assigned by Middlesex County.
Rather they utilize station numbers that align them with the surrounding Mercer County stations.

I saw photos of fire engines with Monroe Township Fire Company No. 1 and Central Monroe Volunteer Fire Company on them. Does anybody know what happened to those companies?
