Check this out. As far as I can tell, it's a former top secret jammer of Voice of America located in Kyrgyzstan. Old cold war stuff and pretty impressive if you ask me. I mean this was a BIG installation and is something that nobody was supposed to see.

Here's the Google translation:

Once-secret military radio center, had jammed in Almaty and in the field of Voice of America, the people and the military called "Burchalka. Currently represents two dozen tall radio masts, countless masts, the smaller and 8-10 buildings, of which only operates one technical (station of cellular communication) and one large pig farm. All of this vast territory is guarded by several local peasant farmers and good-natured grandmother-keeper, as well as several dogs calls. Climbs the sides or rear of a huge holes in the thorns. The place is interesting for its technological categories, as well as stunning views from the antennas.

Thanks for sharing!!! I really dig seeing photos like this! Makes me wish I could take my Collins-built R-390A receiver back 40 years and listen to the jamming signal they were sending out!

I find the photos fascinating...but wonder about the sanity of the fellow who shot them. Climbing 40+ year old, rusty, steel towers. Surely must have been a healthy pucker factor.

Can't take our receivers back in time, but here is a very informative article.

Great link! I bet there is much more out there on this topic.

A friend of mine says this reads: STOP! PROHIBITED ZONE

WHAT THE...:D
yeah there are a few but nothing radio related like this thing k9 brought here. I would love to see in person the woodpecker installation in Russia-when I was a kid growing up in Illinois I heard that thing clear across the MW band in between stations. Never knew what it was.

OOPS....SORRY! No intention of mixing you and the pigs at the farm into the same thought...I was trying to find a PC way of saying stay out of the pig stuff if you go jumping around. I thought it was along the Pacific Coast Highway where I saw some old radio installations, but could be wrong. I've seen a couple of old VOA stations in SC somewhere and a bombed out SW facility in Mogadishu but nothing like this place...yea, the woodpecker brings back some cool memories.

No problem Rdige, just book a tour to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone here!

Chernobyl Tour - Ecological Tour to Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

and I suppose your Woodpecker tour might be something like this:

YouTube - "Russian Woodpecker", Duga 3, Chernobyl 2..High-definition video!!

Just don't forget to bring your Geiger counter.
