Wait a minute, the device is deadly. Expert says handling it for a few moments is fatal. Then it is recovered and old guy expert says 'no problem I will pick up the pellets myself" . Close call? Not for an expert.

Check out Season 1/Episode 8 of the 1950’s TV show Highway Patrol. Ham Radio and the ARRL play a prominent role in this episode. It’s available on YouTube.

A few years ago a cable channel ran the whole series. A great show; always liked to see the long low band whips and the large portable radio they used.

I remember watching the reruns on our black & white TV. (The series ended before I was born, but not too much before, LOL.)
Some observations:

Fatal in seconds...Or not. Good thing that guy was an "expert"! (Of course an "ex" is a has-been, and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure.)

Mathews didn't bother to ask the couple's names, nor make arrangements for the pregnant woman to be medically checked.

And hey, why buy an emergency generator when you can have nuclear backup power!

I am getting the impression that the script was edited by the AEC/NRC. No need to panic about long term effects, at least you are not dead!

I found this show riveting when I was young. In fact, this show was one of the main reasons I grew to love public safety radio communications, 10-4 and out. Here is yet another surprise. They actually used "big words" as opposed to the dumbed-down verbiage of current television. Hell, I had to get the dictionary out one day when the B&W Beverly Hillbillies used a word. The same can be said for Highway Patrol.
