Would anyone support the creation of an ONTARIO ONLY forum so that all of the Ontario posts (about 98% of the stuff in here) could be sorted in its own forum?

This would:

1. Make it easier for Ontario scanner nuts to find Ontario posts;

2. Make it EASIER for people in the other parts of Canada to talk about scanning/read posts.

I think it would be a good idea. Espescially for people out of province... Ontario issues seem to crowd everything else.

Shaun, Lindsay was asked this before and we got this response.

I agree that it would making sorting topics much easier, if the
Ontario stuff was separate.

Why don't we ever see Manitoba scanner stuff here ?

Most of the Manitoba hobbyists (I don't speak for everyone) hang out at my site - http://www.scanmanitoba.com/forum/

As for the Ontario stuff, hopefully Lindsay will reconsider. It takes all of 15 seconds to make a sub-forum for Ontario, and some volunteer time (Hell, I'd do it if he gave me permissions) to move Ontario threads to the new forum.

re: Ontario only forum (spelled correctly)

Just wondering what the big deal is. There isn't a huge number of topics coming up, and I find I can recognize where many of them originate (S/W/Central Ont.). If I think I'm not interested, I skip over them. When I see a topic from "out west" I usually read it, partly because there are not many, and I do like to see what other provinces are saying. However, not everybody is expected to see things my way.

If Ontario were split away from the rest, might as well call it S. Ontario Forum. If it were expanded to all provinces/territories, from what I've seen many of the buckets would be empty most of the time. That is probably a bit too much dilution.

Hi Dave,

Well I'll try putting it into perspective here...

What if there was a "USA forum", with no organization.

I recognize that there's a new VHF trunk in Ontario that you guys like talking about, but every time I come to RR, there's nothing but Ontario posts, and I don't really feel like weeding through them all to find stuff for other parts of Canada.

I have nothing against Ontario. I love Ontario. I just think the posts should be moved their own sub-forum. But I'm just one man :)

I agree; in fact, I was one of the ones who asked previously about making provincial forums. I've just been through trying to invite a bunch of Alberta users to the site, and one of the comments they made in declining my offer is that they would be eclipsed by the massive Ontario traffic.

Like Shaun said, I don't have anything against Ontario users. If I had a big radio system like that in my neck of the woods, I'm sure I'd be posting a lot too. (We'll see when the regional radio project gets underway!)

Count this as one vote for creation of provincial forums, or, at least, Eastern Canada and Western Canada.

Well there are a couple of Canada devoted Yahoo scanner groups, that is, if Lindsay won't put up Canadian regional forums For example,

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AlbertaScannerenthusiasts/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ontscan/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/scanont/

I don't have any real objection to the idea, except the east/west thing; sounds too much like a political split?

Comparing Canada to the US, with 5x as many "entities" and 10x population is a bit of a stretch; of course it would be cumbersome without State forums.

Anyway, when RR expanded, I hoped that it wouldn't suck all the life out of regional boards and other sites, in other words become "too" successful. Fortunately, much of the talk about the TPS, Fleetnet etc. is carried on ScanOnt, otherwise there would be a more compelling reason for a split.

Too bad the posts can't be tagged with a province code that would allow then to be at least manually selected (do I feel a feature request coming on, one that might be used for other countries like Australia? :) )

I agree with Shaun. There are 10 million of us here in the centre of the universe and I think it warrants a forum of its own.

I would suggest that the members wanting an Ontario only forum should make their views known in the "Administration and Help" forum.

Lindsay has been rearranging the forums lately so he might be in an agreeable mood.

I realize it's pretty trivial to add forums but there's a lot of other work that needs to get done that has a higher priority. The database admin's have quite a list of improvements and bugs that need to get sorted out. I'd rather have Lindsay devote his time on that then adding forums.

IF the forum idea doesnt go, what about just making an Ontario Thread and making it a sticky at the top of the forum. :)

It'd be a long thread no doubt, but alot of info would be there too.

just a thought

I'm not so sure I agree with an 'Ontario Only' thread.... that would cover waaaay too many topics and become pretty confusing in a hurry. I'm sort of mixed on breaking the Canada forum into provincial forums. As anyone can see, the vast majority of traffic is indeed from Ontario but that can change at any time, depending on how talkative other members are. But if you visit the forum on a fairly regular basis it's easy to see which threads are new, and which ones may interest you. If it doesn't grab your attention, don't read it. Seems pretty simple to me. I really don't think the forum has enough traffic to warrant breaking it up... but that's only my opinion. One suggestion that I will float out there is perhaps breaking it into 2 forums... Eastern Canada and Western Canada.. Maybe Saskatchewan and West in the Western forum and Manitoba and East in the Eastern forum... that may help a little. Any further thoughts on that??
