Here is a nice view from the top of my tower.
I have to get something up there for 450 before it gets to cold.

450 and 800 is not that great due to all the trees.

It is only 64ft to the top of the tower, then a pipe and my 2 metre antenna.

Below the 2 metre antenna is a 2.4ghz dish that I used to use for internet, but I now have Explornet and their equipment is lower down the tower.
I can turn everything with my rotor. So I like your idea to have a yagi there also.

It is funny but i am using the 2.4 to receive Ottawa EDACS and it works quite well..

I could replace the 2.4 with a yagi as you suggested. Also the dish is connected with LMR 400.
I have to get moving on this before the weather turns cold.

So I have a PSR800 scanner and it should be able to monitor the ONQUE system how do I setup this system on my scanner the program software doesn't even list it.

I have DSD and all ready to go.

There are no scanners compatible with NXDN, PSR800 included. All you can do it program a scanlist with all the channels for your local site (just program each channel as conventional) then pipe the audio out to a PC running DSD+.

Hello,

There is enough frequency information to see if there is a scheme to the numbers.

It appear channels 1 though 82 are defined in groups of three using 6.25 KHz steps with increasing base frequency. These may have been the frequencies for the initial sites.

Above 86 it appears to be each site's frequencies as sites were added in frequency order, unless frequencies were already in the map.

Code:

Matt: I am now fooling around with this system. In Aldershot I get the Hamilton tower perfectly, I'll try to compile a list of what I see and hear.

Quick question: I am surprised I can't really hear the Brantford tower, the CN tower and Milton's. What can you receive? You are in Ancaster I think?

Hello,

I looked at the channel map and compared it to the TAFL allocations in the Toronto area. The start of the map is laid out logically in ascending frequency order and fits the frequency allocations. Some appear to be old analog allocations because they are spaced 100 KHz apart. Some NXDN repeaters support NXDN on two adjacent frequencies using one RF path. It appears some sites are doing this. If they are using some old 25 KHz allocations then that would explain grouping the frequencies in threes. The offsets from the center channel may be different on some frequencies than the 6.25 KHz I assumed.

I did not realize that 410 MHz is also used. I did not search that range when I was in Montreal. I also wonder if the Montreal site numbers are above site 64. There can be up to 254 sites, but the "RAN" value that contains the site code is modulus 64. So Site 65 would appear as Site 1 when looking at a traffic channel. I will check it out next time I am up in Montreal.

Hello,

.................................

Some NXDN repeaters support NXDN on two adjacent frequencies using one RF path. It appears some sites are doing this.

.............................

Interesting you should mention this, Eric. There appears to be a site at Vankleek Hill (Hawkesbury/
Lachute area) with two channels listed 12.5kHz apart, 460.6000/.6125 so they may be doing that.
It's normally out of range for me so no chance to verify it (and if it's actually part of the system), until
the next trip out that way...or enhanced propagation.

Hello,

There could be two repeaters and four channels on that site.

One potential problem is monitoring using a receiver that does not have the narrow 6.25 KHz filters. The two channels may seem like a single channel or decoding will go away when both channels are active.

Some of the older Unidens just boost the audio when narrowband is selected. I use a Icom R2500 that has a 6.25 KHz filter and it does make a difference when receiving NXDN48.

TAFL shows a 3rd channel 463.6125 for that site, but verification is necessary,
as the records don't always reflect recent upgrades to DMR and Nexedge.

Close channel spacing can be worse, have seen an unrelated 4.8k system with
two channels 7.5kHz apart in two cases albeit not at the same site (152.9975 and
153.0050 for example, both continuously active). From my location both come in
roughly the same signal strength. A directional antenna might help in some cases.
Short of an RX with super-narrow filters, or moving geographically closer to one
TX, I wonder which other options would keep the signals separate e.g. IF post-processing
from a tap?

The $10 DVB-T dongles work very well for NXDN48 decoding. A 4 kHz bandpass filter completely isolates individual RF channels. The big 20 channel OnQue site here has several channels that are only 6.25 kHz apart, but I can get perfect CC decoding while the adjacent traffic channels are active. The dongles also provide true flat audio, as there are no AC-coupled paths to distort waveforms.

I was in Ancaster but moved to downtown Hamilton (Bay S of Main) a few months ago. I am up on the 14th floor but unfortunately still blocked by the mountain and a bunch of apartment buildings to get anything significant. I can pick up the Toronto site but haven't had any luck decoding it yet.

Oh and PS this is what I have logged so far on the Hamilton site.

I used to be on the 12th floor of an apartment building on Market Street and had great reception towards Toronto but nothing to the west.

Tried quite a few things but never managed to really overcome the geography.

You must be pretty close to where Graeme and I used to live. I was at 121 Hunter St, top floor facing the lake, corner of Bay St.

Unable at the time to hear the Hamilton Simcoe frequency at the time but Toronto, Peel, no problem for their 800 Mgh systems and fleetnet.

I think WZ1 lived in one of the lower cities tallest condos at the time, all this scanner 'talent' and I did not meet up and become friends with Graeme or WZ1 until we all moved.
