Control channel goes "brrrrr"
I've had a nagging problem for a few years. I like streaming my private scanner feeds through my bluetooth car stereo, but I also want to listen to Apple Music/Pandora/Spotify at the same time. This isn't a problem for android users, but iOS is more of a challenge.
Scanner Radio and LiveATC apps both mix with other audio, but neither accept a custom feed URL.
911 Dispatch, XIIA Live and StreamS accept a custom URL, but will not continue streaming when another audio source is played.
Action Scanner Pro will stream a custom URL in the background with music, but I wasn't super keen on the yearly subscription price.
Zello will mix, but "ducks" the music, which can be annoying with a busy scanner going.
In comes a program called SonoBus. SonoBus appears to have hit the scene during the pandemic to allow quarantined musicians to jam with each other. Latency can be synced between clients and sometimes less than 50ms on a good connection. It uses Peer to Peer UDP streaming, only using a SonoBus server to set up the connections.
I installed this on my iPhone over the weekend. It took a bit of trial and error to get the audio dialed in. Once I did, I had mixable, multi channel audio. I stream my SDS100 on the left side and BC125AT on the right side for airband. Audio gain is adjustable and I can mix it how I want into the music. I can also mute or solo a channel easily from the mobile app. The sync is tight enough that I can still use my Proscan web page to view the scanner screen for alpha tags.
I don't know enough to provide a ton of support, but I thought this could be useful to others. There may be benefits/issues to this platform that I haven't discovered yet. None the less, I am pleased as pie streaming music and radio traffic at the same time.
(I have no affiliation to the project, just checked a lot of boxes for my use case.)
