From a value point of view, these radios are excellent for the money, IF:
- Your monitoring targets are just FM voice.
- You don't need a high scan speed.
- You live in a location where the RF environment is not to harsh"

Yeah, I originally got the first one just to place on one frequency 24/7. It's now in possession of my Honey. The second one (arriving today) will only have three or four frequencies programmed into it, with the 5th (weather) will be set on SKIP. Your right, with so few channels, it scans fast enough.

Welllll, the RF environment in my den could probably use a little remediation, but surprisingly it did okay, even on a problematic frequency.

No and yes. While ripping off may be too strong a word😵‍💫 both sides in this have merit. We have no knowledge of the actual cost of production for either the radios or batteries. I have both brands and like both for individual unique reasons as many have stated above.

The Baofeng battery << Amazon Link >> shows their 3800mAh battery, it has a lot of plastic on it, and does not look like it would be cheaper to manufacture than the Uniden battery << Amazon Link >> but they are both made in China.

$14.99 $58.03

If you add another $1.93 to that $58.04 you would be able to buy FOUR Baofeng batteries, but even three batteries with change left over is why I questioned whether they are overcharging. Even if one factors for a lower scale of production, the price disparity seems rather high.

You can price cars and suv's the very same way.
It all boils down to if you want it buy it, if you don't want it then don't buy it.
Along the same line if you think you can do better then built it and sell it yourself.
Both valid points but we know that Uniden is what it is, when the bulging battery issues came up they addressed it but the batteries remained the same from the same manufacturer, they have a business model, their own specifications and these batteries are what they come up with.

As I say many of us know Uniden, are they going to change specifications and have more efficient batteries produced in China and distributed to the vendors that would last 3X as long? No, I don't think so.

It would be nice if there were aftermarket batteries that would fit perfectly and could be made inexpensively that lasted three times longer than the Uniden battery. That would be great and I think it certainly could be done.

Don't know about all the copyright rules and such and again I don't think Uniden themselves are going to contract with somebody to build that battery but that doesn't mean they're ripping us off. That's their business model.$$$

Dunno if the listed low price is because he doesn't have any, or if he's out because he had a low price.

The East Coast Port strike was only postponed till January for reasons I will not go into.. only destiny will tell what will happen, but if these batteries are actually in stock at whatever price they are, it would be some pretty Sage advice to pick up a couple......... tomorrow.

I'm going to guess it's because of something that's happening a week from Tuesday that would have been bad optics for the port union and their endorsed candidate.. but that's just a wild guess 🤐

As for the original post, LOL why on earth would anyone buy an SDS is all they wanted to listen to was VHF or UHF analog? A used $40 Radioshack PRO-164 can do that. That would be like buying a dump truck to commute 2 miles to work in every day. The purpose of the SDS is to deal with simulcast. Otherwise a 436HP does everything for a few hundred bucks less.

When I'm on the freeway I like to monitor the State Patrol which is P25, when I'm travelling I use the GPS feature, when I'm home I like to record some transmissions and I also like to listen to stuff the UV5R cannot pick up, so the SDS fills other requirements. I also use an RSP1 for discovery, digital decoding and HF, again it's the right radio for the application.

Ya gotta read the whole thread, like I said, the right tool for the right job. I don't always listen to all things at all times.

I was more responding to the below statement from your original post. If you want your SDS to work you'll have to pay up. Batteries made/sold by brand name manufacturers typically cost more than no name CCP stuff. Iphone does/did the same stuff with their $40 charging cables where $5 knockoffs would be detected and stop charging. Worked fine on Android though. I hate Apple. I also hate proprietary battery packs. On a side note, it's hilarious to me that my work (which is in the RRDB) hasn't broadcast a single transmission in over a year..why? All but one radio stopped taking a charge and Moneyrola charges an obscene amount for new batteries. The last ones lasted 2-3 years and we didn't even use them much, a handful of times a week? There's other users still on the system but we're dead air, largely replaced by cell use at least for now.

if analog VHF is going to be your primary mode of listening

Well, I just recently bought one, now two because my honey thought the first one was "cute" and wanted it for her purse. So, if something FINALLY got her to bite on a radio, that really is something! :)(y)
That, sir, is more than enough justification to buy a Baofeng!

Okay, before the flame wars start, let me be clear...

A Uniden 5400mAH battery is around $55.00-$58.00 and in the battery sucking SDS100 does not last all day. In my area, 90% of everything I listen to is VHF analog, and the battery in the UV5R does last all day, so guess which one I keep in the car while local?

A UV5R, depending on configuration is around $20.00 - $30.00 and that is not just for the battery it also for the radio and a docking charger. Toss in about another $10.00 and have a programming cable as well, so all that and still under the price of a single Uniden replacement battery, which is also made in China.

So, why would I want to buy a single Uniden battery to replace my swelling backup battery when there are so many options of the UV5R variety?
Don't get me wrong, the SDS100 is a far superior radio and does things the UV5R could never do, but if analog VHF is going to be your primary mode of listening why buy a Lamborghini when a Hyundai will still get you there? Different application, different radio.
A better choice than a UV-5R would be a Quansheng UV-K5 and install (easy) new free alternate firmware (I prefer egzumer) which adds a spectrum analyzer and a frequency counter. If Uniden had those, they would charge you a high price for it. Yes I have and SDS200 but prefer an Airpspy R2 with DSD+ for home use but the SDS100 is still the best choice for mobile when you cannot bring a PC. But for analog handheld, the UV-K5 with a better added antenna is real nice (and you can charge is with a cell phone Type-C cable).

Oh heck yeah, the SDS radios do a LOT and believe me whenever I leave town or go on vacation that is the one I take with me. I especially like the GPS feature that came with the remote head I got from @mancow which really makes it even more useful. When you talk about home use, the RSP1 SDR is my "go to" when I want to play.

Damn, it's too late to consider that K5 now, I have three portables (not counting HF radios or the one my Honey decided to put in her purse). I did make a couple of 3D printed stands for the new Baofengs, I think they turned out nice.
