i was wondering where people was getting the info for opp to leave fleetnet for phase 2 p25 if it was from inside source or if there was a news article about it? thanks

Good question.......
I was wondering the same thing myself. Does Bell Fleetnet have plans to upgrade their 142 MHz trunking system to ASTRO 7.8? This is the only way they could support P25 Phase II modulation. On the other hand, does the OPP have plans to join the RCMP 420 MHz P25 TRS that is currently under construction across the province?

I heard their new system is designed specifically to lock out the media and tow trucks. 
Like Mike said, anything posted now is just speculation. Once a contract has been signed and we start seeing changes, then it can be said with greater certainty. It's my gut feeling that whatever they eventually upgrade to (there will come a point in the future where that needs to happen) will include encryption.
That said, what's wrong with what they're on right now? The system isn't THAT old, and radios are still being made to this day which are fully operational on Fleetnet as it is right now.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

so if i understand it right they are staying put? i am just confused from what others includeing mike said in another topic
Some OPP Intell officers told me they had plans to go 100% enc on all talkgroups not just theirs (the intell and surv TG's)
That was last year, and they said it will be quite sometime but it was in talks then

hmmm let me think. If OPP came off the system that would mean that there would be (est 1000 ) lost customers for bell.Now that they have all of that free space would that not be a good time for them to lower thier price so that (the little guy,fire,local police,ems,roads.) could go on the system and save tax payers a lot of money on building a system....thoughts anyone

Guys, there is still plenty of listening time on fleetnet.
Considering that this system (fleetnet) is relatively new, with the recent expansion in North Western Ontario
Unless a Bell Mobility Radio Management Rep can verify a contract renewal, or amendment of the currrent contract, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like this information would be made public right away.
Just look at the time it took to transfer the Whole province from NOR to Fleetnet.
If there is a news article, or something in regards to this, that has legitamacy to it, i am sure one of the plenty of members would post it.
For now, just sit back and relax, and enjoy the free flowing fleetnet p25 tg's, you've been
listening too. Until encryption becomes current on the OPP regular OPS tg's.
This reminds me of the g20 Toronto TPS radio scare. They are still operating on the analog smartzone system. But people thought it would be encrypted back in june. Never happened. But it's inevitable that it will be switched in the Near future with the Radio System Replacement Project, that is still currently in progress. As Toronto did mention that they would keep their analog system in progress even with the temporary g20 system that was in use.

well, with technology advancing more and more each day, i'm sure some guy will come up with a crack for ENC.....maybe... its sometimes not that easy though... Let us hope when and if the time comes for Fleetnet to change to something different, then Uniden would get their hands on the protocol for Phase 2. all we have to do is wait.....
Ah, always seeing the "We'll just crack it" ideas. Assuming that someone comes up with a way to crack the encryption in real-time...it would still be illegal to crack. No manufacturer is going to build this into their scanner because it is illegal.
As soon as such a method becomes available, Motorola/Harris/EFJ, etc... is just going to come out with a better encryption. Look to the satellite industry. Every time encryption gets cracked, they change the method. There's a lot more interest there to crack the encryption than with scanners, which is why you see them forever in a battle.

Toronto's public safety agencies moved to SmartZone back around 2002 and they're already working on upgrading to P25. OPP started moving to SmartZone at about the same time and now Motorola is killing off their 3600 bps product, so of course the OPP are looking to the future and are working on choosing their migration path. Change is coming, but there is no point in worrying now about what is still years down the road.
In my neck of the woods we're more concerned with the changes that are coming to Halton, Peel, Toronto, Durham and York Region. Most, if not all, of them will upgrade before the OPP.

ah when i saw the other thread i was begining to wonder because i am going to be buying the pro 106 and i did not want to get it if opp was going to change within a year of me getting the scanner

Is phase 2 , double slot TDMA. The only one i can think of that has capable uses of this is MOTOTRBO with a 12.5 khz bandwith.

These things always start out like this , just a crumb of information that nobody really seems to know anything more about , but one thing is for sure , the trend is definitely for agencies to become unmonitorable

If I lived in the Windsor area I would be content just having MPSCS and Detroit Police/Fire to listen to. It's almost too much to listen to at once as it is!
Ya but the thing with the MPSCS is that , it seems the antenna system is directionally turned in on the city & even though we are close its very difficult to get it reliably at all , maybe once the market gets flooded with 996's after the OPP go ENC I'll pick one up cheap & experiment with a directional hi gain antenna,...
Very true. Those simulcast systems can be incredibly fussy to receive decently.
But really if you are worried about upgrading to an expensive radio & then encryption coming
I am probably going to try this , just think of how many feeds are online & what you could do with this,..
