If I recall correctly and mind you, memory is not perfect with the passing of time and age, but I believe the OFD Chief made a post several years ago to the effect that civilians had no business monitoring FD communications. This was said in connection with the topic of OPD going 'E' full time. As such, I'm pleasantly surprised OFD did not go"E"also. But, then with the current Chief... who knows what the future may hold?
Still no plans for the "E" and there never will be, not smart or functional for a fire service, especially volunteer, however 2 things.
#1 Not the chief you were speaking to just to clarify that confusion, still not the chief, just share the same name.
#2 my comment may have been taken the wrong way. What I was saying was, with the coverage issues OVFD was having, the p25 was a very good option to seal up those bad areas, as we already had all the equipment to make the switch for years now p25 was the best option. Luckily now, we have no more dead zones in our trouble areas, RT 15, derby Milford Rd, wheelers farm, herbert, etc. For public safety and more importantly member safety, this was a good decision and unfortunately the people who enjoy listening have upgrade their scanners, or use broadcastify or any other streaming online to hear us. Not only that its even nicer to not have people talking over each other as you could probably imagine, and even better not listening to long island all the time with the minitors when you forget to reset the selective call.
I am not sure what you are referring to with " What the future might hold" but after years upon years of working through many issues and getting the funding together ( which I'm sure you may imagine ) we are finally done with our system until its time for the next upgrade years from now.
Glad I could clarify.
