• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an 800 MHz Orion and when I hit bumps (more like huge potholes) in the road my volume goes up ( i haven't seen it go down ;))... and it is really annoying. The volume and talkgroup knobs are not loose but any vibration will make the volume go up on my radio.

It is a 2 piece unit ... with separate system control head.

Anyone have a similar problem with their Orion ? I am looking for a possible fix to the problem, short of repaving all the roads so that they are smoother.

Does the display show VOL = nn when it does this? (replace the nn with whatever number it was showing)

If yes then the knob in the control head may have a bad connection or is faulty, causing it to adjust itself when you hit bumps.

If the radio drawer is radically changing volume on its own without the control head telling it to that could be a bigger problem inside. Potentially a bad connection or something shorting out.

Is it a remote mount? Check all your wiring, DC power and ground, speaker wiring, accessory cable, control cable. Check your speaker, it may be bad also.

Is the radio a dual head? If so, is it programmed correctly? There could be something tweaking the volume control on the other head causing it to change the radio volume. (stranger things have happened).

The unit works perfectly except for this .. single head unit.

The only issue is that the volume know is too freewheeling.. and turns very easily. Thus any vibration seems to make the knob vibrate and thus increasing the volume.

I have tried 2 control heads .. and they appear to be the same.

Perhaps add a friction washer, made out of felt or similar, underneath the knob... might help?

Yes ... that is what I am going to do. I just drove about 60 miles with the radio marked at its beginning point. The volume knob moved about a 1/4 inch.
I know that isn't huge but it does make the volume noticeably louder.

I didn't monitor if it was going up (louder) and down (quieter), as I drove but just looked at the beginning and the end of my trip.

I fixed the problem by putting 2 rubber o-rings behind the volume knob and putting things back to their original locations. Everything is working much better and this problem is resolved.

IIRC, you can pull the knob off and tighten the small allen(?) head to increase resistance in the knob. I don't have one in front of me or i'd show ya.

What you are describing is not the solution ... you cannot tighten the allen key screw to increase the resistance. The allen key screw just allows the plastic piece to be secured to the shaft of the volume pot, it does nothing as far as the resistance of the volume knob.
