can I listen to Ottawa fire with a trunking style scanner that decode analog only.I don't care about police. and are there any programs that will let me decode their alpha pagers on my scanner hooked uptp my computer??

Yes, Ottawa's public safety system is http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=1750 it's an EDACS system. ONLY Ottawa Police on the system are digital, therefore, not able to be monitored, but the rest of the system is ok to be heard.

The attached file I believe is what you need to monitor the pagers. I think it'll only work with the 400 mhz freq's and not the 155.610 frequency. That aside however it is illegal to monitor digital type pager frequencies in Canada. I've never used this program before but apparently it will do the trick.

Yes, any good analog EDACS scanner will work on OFD. As for
digital, some airport operations are digital (security) and there may be
others.

As for paging, be careful about Pigs with Unibrow getting their facts
crossed. The VHF frequency is POCSAG and any good decoder
should work. The UHF frequency is for linking, and apparently not
a common standard.

Confucius, or some other wise person, once said "He who adopts goofy
avatar must sometimes endure laughter, even at own expense". He also

So, if decoding paging is illegal (which you say it is; myself, I'm not sure it is
exactly despite previous discussion), and you give somebody the tools to
decode it, isn't it sort of like "underage drinking is illegal, but here's a bottle...
but DON'T drink any of it!". I'm not sure what Confucius would say
about that.

Anyway, the off-topic alarm is going off...

Hey Dave, I was listening to Ottawa City and why is it, recently I here analong transmission on EDACS suddenly go to something that sounds digital then back to analog, something like a cellphone if u know what i mean. I didn't pay attention to the ID as I was in my car driving. Have u heard this recently and what is it? As Far as i know the only thing that is digital is the Ottawa Police Service. But this was digital mix on and off and Ottawa City is all analog. I was picking this up on the North Gower Tower as I was driving.

Sorry, thread has gotten away from the original topic (I'll get to it). For the EDACS problem I have a couple of theories. First is plain overload, if you're close to a TX site. I get this on some radios downtown.

The second is to do with the radio. At the end of an analog call, the radio returns to the control channel. It has to sense the end of transmission, probably from the time-out sequence (beeps). I think the scanner occasionally misses one of these and stays on the channel. If there is a digital call right after it (they can run back-back), that's what you hear. Being mobile (fading) and/or in a weak signal area could be a factor.

What kind of radio is it? Some might handle the above better or worse than others.
