Hi members, I'll be at Outer banks next two weeks for vacation. What systems overthere - conventional or trunking - can I listen to? Mainly I want monitor public service. Can I have a chance to listen to US Cost Guard and Air Route Traffic Control with my mobile antenna installed on the top of the chalet? What's about local Police/Fire system ?
Thanks in advance.

There is plenty of public safety information here in the database section for Dare and Currituck County's. Local traffic is conventional vhf/ uhf. You may possibly be able to hear NC VIPER if you have a digital scaner.

There is also local coast guard activity to listen to, from the Coast Guard Cape Hattaras group. They use the marine band frequencies... somewhere here too(?), but I can't recall where.

Also look up the conventional highway patrol channels and depending where you are in OBX, you may be able to pick up traffic from Chesapeake and Va Beach systems.

Hope this helps,
Todd

Thanks tglendye,
I'll be at Avon area. So, I'll try to listen to Chesapeake Bay and VA Beach too, as your suggestion. My scanner is digital capable, so i'll try listening to NC Viper as well. thanks again.

Unless there is tropo affecting the 800 band you won't hear Virginia Beach or Chesapeake that far away. I know this as I deliver freight to the Dollar Tree in Avon most Tuesdays; Dollar Tree HQ and warehouse is in Chesapeake, a 2-1/2 hour drive from the Avon store.

In Avon you'll want to focus on Dare County PD/FD south freqs. Listen for Dare County North for PD's/FD's freqs for Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo. All the freqs are here in the RRDB.

Hope you enjoy your stay!

We've stayed everywhere from Hatteras to Corolla over the last 15 summers and I've taken my scanner the last few years. As much as the military air, coast guard/marine and even some of the public safety can be fun...even after 15-years I don't know enough local geography to make them exciting for me. Not terribly interesting to know there's an accident in a township whose name I dont recognize. I'm also not terribly familiar with military comms, so they may be more interesting to someone who is. From Corolla you pick up VA Beach easy, from Avon it's not likely.

I'll qualify that a little by saying that If something big is going (i.e. weather, military exercise, search/rescue, fire...) then of course it's all very interesting.

With that said, I've found the most interesting comms to be our local lifeguards, and believe it or not FRS/GMRS. When weather rolls through or there is discussion of people on the beach, then the lifeguards are fun...especially when you get the inside track on beach activity...and whether on the ride down or simply sitting on the beach, FRS/GMRS is always entertaining.

If not on the beach, then we usually park the scanner in the kitchen locked onto the lifeguard freq. If you do take it to the beach, be sure to get a bag to protect it from sand & spray, and be sure to take headphones so you can actually hear over the surf. This is especially true for Avon where the beach winds can be pretty extreme, both in noise and sand-blasting you and your scanner.

I'm actually debating whether to take mine at all this year given the low frequency of interesting stuff going on the last few years versus the hassle of packing all the scanner stuff (radio, antenna, bateries, charger, bag, headphones...). Whatever you decide have fun and if you're looking for any local traffic, food or beer advice, let me know.

Thanks all of you, friends - specially fuzzymoto, hahhaha. I need a good beer/wine liquor store address overthere. With correction in the last minute: we'll be a Salvo in lieu of Avon. Well, i'll monitor frs/gmrs too, for sure.
As your advices, i'll concentrate to monitor mainly local public freqs in lieu of VAs systems.

No problemo...OBX is all about relaxing and enjoying a good beverage on the beach. We've been to Salvo and Avon and they are fairly close. If you're a lover of the beers (like me) then your only hope in Avon is the Food Lion. Some local favorites that should be available are Weeping Radish (Black Radish, OBX & 'Fest)...all brewed by Weeping Radish on Manteo Island. Sadly their brewing facility is now off OBX on the mainland, but the beers are still yummy and available just about everywhere in OBX. If you're willing to travel 30-45 mins then head up to Manteo and visit Weeping Radish, or continue up 158 to the Nags Head area for the OBBS (Outer Banks brewing Station). Weeping Radish sells bottles and OBBS sells growlers (64oz bottles you can refill)...most OBBS beers are good but avoid the Lemongrass Wheat....it's an odd beer that other than helping deter mosquitos, doesn't do much for us.

If you're up that way be sure ot hit the Coastal Cactus for some southwestern grub and some great Margharitas (Peach is my fav).

As far as attractions you'll love the Oregon Inlet bridge as you travel south and if you return north be sure to hit Jockey's Ridge State park (huge sand dunes), the Kitty Hawk Memorial and the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Just south of you in Buxton is the famous Hatteras Lighthouse and a free ferry ride to Ockracoke Island...with yet another small lighthouse. Be sure to also drive down to Hatteras Village and trek down to the end of the island....very cool area.

Have I left anything out?

Where are you driving in from and what day is your house check-in (Sat or Sun)??

- My check-in is next Sat, just in time to celebrate the 4th July overthere :)
- Have I left anything out? Yes (joke here :)). But i heard about Ocrakoke island is simply beautiful like a last century, one of the must place to be visited in OBX.
- we come from Montreal (Quebec), so a long-long trip before tasting your local beer.
- I'll be at OBX mainly for road bicycling rides, my favorite sport. I try to visit town to town only with my road bike and leave the car for kids to go shopping themself.

For the Wiki pages, look at the toolbar at the top of this forum page.

Besides the sand and water spray, also try to keep the LED display out of the direct sunlight.

If VHF and UHF are too quiet for you, consider tuning across the A.M. broadcast band. During the daytime, reception numerous stations for the northeast U.S. is pretty common ... Phialdephia, Boston, N.Y.C., etc. In the car, you'll notice the DX about the time you reach the Albemarle Sound.

When I was younger, I used to enjoy hanging out on the beach near Rodanthe, passing the time listening to the Yankees when they had a day game. Just in case you were an Expos fan, I looked at their schedule to see if they were playing anyone in the northeast ... the closest thing was a series with the Mets near the end of the month.

Coming from Montreal you will have a long ride, especially if you do it in one day. Traffic in the outer banks can be rough on Saturdays, especially for the 4th of July. If at all possible, try to cross the bridge out to the island on Rt 158 BEFORE noon. If you arrive much later that tha, you'll spend a considerable amount of time crossing the bridge in traffic. Going south you should be OK after that. Northbound traffic has a huge jam in Duck, but southbound will not be bad, especially after you get south of Nags Head.

Ocracoke island is like stepping back in time. I only visited once and it was very scenic, but very small...not a lot of things to do beyond taking pictures and visiting shops and restaurants...but well worth the free ferry ride.

Cycling is very popular in OBX. My brother and I have taken down road bikes just about every year. Down in Salvo and Avon you'll find Rt 12 (pretty much the ONLY road) is great for biking....long straights and very little cross-traffic. The road surface can be gritty with the sand so do take some spare inner-tubes and do watch for sand hazzards on the edges of the road.

If the kids are into Monster Trucks, you'll also pass the home of the famous Grave Digger out on Rt 158 before you cross onto the island.

It's a long ride but well worth the trip for the beer or just the scenery.

I'm going down to OBX (Duck area) beginning July 18th. As for my Va Beach area suggestion... scratch that if you're staying that far south. My experience is that if you are much farther south than Corolla, VAB does not come in.

By the way, is there a way you can download the maritime and USCG channels from RR using Win500? The last I looked I wasn't able to find them using the download function of the software.

Enjoy,
Todd

- Concerning USCG, i go directly to USCG's site and copy/paste their freqs for building my listening system. i use ARC396Pro.
- i already have VAs system in my scanner, i'll try anyway.

OBX Listening

Go to the Database menu here and click on the state of North Carolina and it and then click on the locations right below Chesapeake City, VA
Currituck
Dare
Kitty Hawk/Nags Head
Manteo

Most of what I hear pertaining to the USCG is the Broadcasts and when someone calls "Securite' " or "Pan - Pan".

Most of USCG ops are far from VHF/UHF range and they use SSB on the HF bands.

You can hear the charter boats out in the ocean or/ in the Sound Area talkin' 'bout what someone caught that day.

Aircraft reception is really good, especially the ARTCC freqs and 122.9 (FFA) Tour Flights in and out of Kittty Hawk Airport.

Public Safety Conventional is pretty active with mostly the Beach Patrols and Fire / EMS calls. Police can be heard as well, whenever something is going down or the traffic stop / speeders.

I'm going in September and I load my scanners up.

I don't have Digital right now.
I'm saving up for a Dual Bander 2m/440 MHz Xcvr to go in my 07 Dakota SLT 4x4.

Enjoy your stay at the Chalet :)
