At 09:00 hours the Union Fire Company No. 1 was alerted for an auto accident, involving an overturned tractor trailer, on the Route 1 bypass northbound, on the off ramp at Route 10.
Immediately after dispatch, Chester County 911 upgraded the incident with reports of the driver trapped inside the truck. This added Medic 94 (SCCEMS) and Rescue 27 to the assignment.
Ambulance 21-2 and Engine 21-2 quickly made the response and arrived on scene to find that a tractor trailer hauling scrap metal had overturned on the off ramp and come to rest against the guard rail.
The crews went to work putting the 'O' Cutters and Spreaders in service to remove the roof to gain access to the patient.
Squad 21 and Engine 21-1 arrived and utilized the compliment of Hurst tools to assist with extrication. The Hyrda Ram was put in service to further spread the roof from the cab to access the driver.
After removing the roof and passenger seat from the truck, crews were able to extricate the patient in just 25 minutes from the arrival of the first piece of fire apparatus.
Ambulance 21-2 transported the patient to the hospital and all 21 Units were available just before 10:00 hours.
