To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know how to program systems into a EF Johnson 5100 using the PcConfigure 2.18.6? I am having trouble getting all the control channels in to a system. Have searched the web with no luck on and videos to help me get the programming figured out. Any Suggestions would be awesome.

#1 Are you the System Administrator of the System?
#2 If it is a P25 Trunking System are you Authorized to have a Legal Copy of the System Key?
#3 What System are you Authorized to be using this radio on?
#4 Does your EFJ 5100 have a LEGAL KEY to turn on P25?
My advise to you is to take the EFJ 5100 to the Radio Shop or System Administrator and have your Radio put on the System the Legal Way.

P25 is enabled on my radio as well as smartnet trunking and multi net if I could get someone to help me get it programmed that would be great instead of everyone telling me it can’t be done because I know it can be because I can pick up what I want breifly but entering everything by key pad

if someone wants to privately message me I can show them what all options are on my radio it won’t let me load it up on here

The final 6.18.0 firmware allows NAS, I have a friend who got it working.

Personally I stick to scanning voice channels. Zero grey area with that.
do you think your friend could help me out everything on my radio is enable p25 trunking, smartnet trunking, smartzone trunking, multi net trunking. I just cabt figure out how to add my control channels everything else i got, my ids for my channels and my site codes and system codes.

You need a sys key. You can only get that from the sys admin. No one here is going to hand you a key. It's illegal. Generally, KW/EFJ radios suck for NAS because of the key issues. I would look into other options

Without the system key which you can get only from the system admin ,it will be next to impossible to program it for NAS. Is the system a phase 1 or phase 2 system??? Those radios are not good for using them for NAS. I have both portables and mobile units and they can not NAS unless you have that one firmware. I am sorry but please please unless you know what you are doing do not try to attempt to use them for NAS, as if you made a mistake someone could end up being hurt and or worse. The radio is a public safety employees lifeline so please please do not attempt to use that kind of radio. What system are you trying to NAS? do you know how to set a radio up for nas? why not start off with the unification pagers as they really great for listing and as you learn how to do little by little and do your homework by reading and finding videos to start. Right now you have thrown up so many red flags to those of us here. Please do your home online and their are other web sites besides RR that has information. Sorry if it sounds like we do not want to help you but when it comes to public safety NAS those who work in public safety their lives come first and we want to keep anyone from getting hurt and or worse.

There are some threads on monitoring trunking using an SDR which I think should be the way to go or get a scanner that might do trunking.

An EFJ 5100 is not really designed to be used as a scanner. I think what your trying to do is set up your radio to associate with a trunking system which would require it to transmit on frequencies your not authorized for. To do so would require the EFJ system key for the trunking system which the folks who run the trunking system aren't going to let you have and its not something you can hack. And if by some chance you did get the radio associated? the trunking systems operator is going to note your activity and send your radio a kill command which will turn your 5100 into a brick. Ok?

EFJ are not good for NAS let alone anything else. My old department used to use them when they first came out. They had many problems. Not a fan of that line.

I had a fleet of 5100 and 5300 in the fire service for over 15 years and the only radio that failed was the one that got run over by the pumper.

You had better luck then what we did. The whole county had nothing but issues with them. We picked them up in 07-08 when they went to a statewide p25 trunk system. After a few years and many issues, everyone started going over to XTS5k. Who knows, bad batch of 1st gen radios.

There's is also a minor issue where three different generations of radios that got the 5x00 branding. Internally, these were x-series, i-series and ARM series. Most of the ES models were the ARM series which used (go figure) ARM CPUs which is still what Viking series radios are developed off of today. EFJ fixed many issues in firmware...but many of the firmware fixes wouldn't come out until later on. For example, 6.18.0 didn't drop until around 2014 but it fixed a lot of the issues.
