PayPal security

I was going to renew my account for a 6 month term but am hesitating as I am getting a warning on the security certificate from linking to pay pal via the RR direct link.

I get this warning when clicking on the padlock

Parts of the page you are viewing were not encrypted before being transmitted over the internet. Information sent over the Internet without encryption can be seen by other People while in transit.

If I go to my PayPal account and sign in directly there is no issue at all with the PayPal security certificate.

Yeah I signed in with Google Chrome Browser instead of Firefox and this is what I get with the Pop up warning from Chrome . Screenshot from Lightshot


The actual PP site is fully encrypted.

I am about 95% sure that when someone got my CC info that it was somehow gleaned from Paypal-Ebay. Luckily Discover caught it real fast & called me & stopped it. In a matter of 24 hours thousands of $ in charges were attempted. Obviously it is possible; you know Paypal is owned by E-Bay---

It's probably because the radioreference logo at the top is pulled down with http and not via the SSL connection from PayPal.

Yes I think that is what is going on. Anyhow I renewed and then I went back to PayPal site after renewing membership and changed my password to be extra safe.

Then I would also use Noscript. Must read about it. No BS Man in the middle attacks here by god.

What does the url look like? If it looks bogus I would suspect something ain't right. But this could be a false positive anyhow.

It's really not a big deal, as long as the URL is legit showing HTTPS. Mixed content like that happens frequently and is perfectly normal.

I agree, now I never gave paypal my new card info, but I liked to use it for ordering from dicey websites.

I recently saw a TV report that mentioned how many people have no idea that when doing secure transactions of any kind on the web that the URL absolutely MUST begin with HTTPS, otherwise you're opening up yourself to all kinds of easily done fraud schemes.

Two things I always do on PayPal. 1. Always pay with a credit card. 2. If absolutely necessary to pay with a bank account, have a very small balance in an account that you use ONLY for PayPal and make it the ONLY ACCOUNT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO. That way if PayPal ever "freezes" your account for one of their crazy reasons you'll only have maybe a couple of hundred bucks tied up for a while.

If you use PayPal a lot i suggest you get a Security Key from them. Its a credit card sized number randomizer that is linked to your account. When you log in you press the button on the card and add the six digit number to the end of your password. I have been using it for years, actually i had the first version of this that was the secure keyfob that did the same thing.

No credit card numbers pass from PayPal to the Merchant that your paying when using PayPal so there is no way someone could have got your credit card info that way. When you use a credit card with PayPal they simply have that info on file and when you make a purchase PayPal charges your card then transfers the funds to the person you are paying. They never get the actual credit card info.

The only cases i have heard about and seen where someone got their credit card info stolen via PayPal was if the thief actually logged into their account and got the info from their credit card info page. But they have to log into your account to see that. If your worried about it get the security key from them, then nobody can get in without physical access to your key.

You can login without the security key by answering security questions, but if you randomize those you can really lock your account down. I did that years ago and no worries.

It appears that the only reason it is showing security errors is because the logo is coming from a non-secure server. Your connection to paypal is secure.
